1. Halitha Shameem
Director Halitha Shameem received the much-needed applause with her debut film, Poovarasam Peepee, and won everyone’s hearts with her feel-good anthology Sillu Karupatti. Her debut film showcased the Director’s control over execution as she handled the kids cleverly in the thriller and with her second movie, Halitha displayed more maturity and took both her writing and directorial skills to a whole new level.
The splendid handling of sensitive and fresh stories in Sillu Karupatti made it the first successful anthology in Tamil. And with Halitha’s next film titled Aelay ready for release and the subsequent project, Minmini said to be a coming-of-age drama we have to wait and see how these movies turn out.
2. Mari Selvaraj
Next on the list of Up and Coming Kollywood Directors, in his directorial debut, Pariyerum Perumal, Mari Selvaraj shined bright as a profound writer with his sensible writing and exceptional directing skills and managed to portray a distinct tone to a social caste-based drama. Mari Selvaraj’s mature handling throughout the film garnered him huge appreciation and created immense trust in his craft and his ideologies. His next project – Karnan, starring Actor Dhanush is already on the floors, and Selvaraj created a good buzz around the film.
3. Nelson Dilipkumar
Yet another director who managed to create a good impression with his debut movie, Kolamaavu Kokila, is Nelson Dilipkumar. After his debut film Vettai Mannan got shelved, he tasted success with the Nayanthara starrer that showcases a smuggling incident performed by a woman.
The beautiful blend of the serious plot with humor and neatly written characters made the movie different, and also displayed Nelson’s ability to execute a dark comedy. With the focus now on his second directorial project Doctor starring Sivakarthikeyan, we hope that the director would not become a one-film wonder and will continue to entertain us in his future projects.
4. Thiagarajan Kumararaja
Director Thiagarajan Kumararaja turned out very assuring ever after his debut movie Aaranya Kaandam and matched the audience’s expectations with his Super Deluxe. Kumaraaja’s chill and carefree attitude, you could witness during his interviews are reflective at times in his movies despite discussing some serious interlinked stories. The sincerity of the Director in showcasing many unscathed stories gained separate attention towards him. Even though the Kumaraaja takes a plentiful time to surprise us with his movies, he created an aura that it is worth waiting to experience.
5. Nalan Kumarasamy
Among the current crop of directors, Nalan Kumarasamy varies himself as someone with a good comical sense. Soodhu Kavvum, a heist-thriller, and Kadhalum Kadanthu Pogum, a romantic drama, but the exertion of humor in both the movies to flow the story smoothly is Kumarasamy’s secret of success. His writing collaborations in films like Theeya Velaiseiyanum Kumaru, Maayavan, and Super Deluxe showcases his love for the craft and makes him a promising star.
6. Lokesh Kanagaraj
Last on the list of the Up and Coming Kollywood Directors, with only two films under his belt, Lokesh Kanagaraj stands tall as a very promising director in Kollywood primarily because of the newness in both his scripts, Maanagaram and Kaithi, added with the solid screenplay work made him more hopeful director in the present generation.
With his next movie Master starring ‘Thalapthy’ Vijay and Vijay Sethupathi in the lead roles and the buzz that his next movie would be with Superstar Rajinikanth shows the growth of Director Lokesh Kanagaraj in such a short span. I am sure that Tamil cinema is going to witness many genre-specific movies done without any compromise in the future.
