8 Controversial Topics Explored in Tamil Movies

In the past of Tamil Cinema, when compared to the general commercial films, particular topics like religion, sex, nudity, etc. have been kept aside or touched partially. These topics have been labeled as taboo as it may offend a wider set of audiences, but, here and there, these movies kept releasing discussing these topics, not caring about the reception, criticism, and censorship of the content. Recently filmmakers started to explore these topics more frequently, and I ran through the list and made a list of movies which are bold attempts and have been an eyeopener to many.

8. Dhanam

Starring – Sangeetha, Kota Srinivasa Rao

Dhanam discussed an unusual plot of a woman involved in prostitution beginning married life, that too, into an orthodox family. The movie also handled many traditional issues and misbelieves prevailing around us, and how a woman and her feelings are taken for granted in our society. Dhanam is a bold and awakening attempt with a female lead.

7. Adhalaal Kadhal Seiveer

Starring – Santhosh, Manisha Yadav
Director – Suseenthiran
Streaming Platform – Disney+ Hotstar

Adhalaal Kadhal Seiveer showcased the problem of premarital pregnancy and the aftermath of it. It cleverly handled this problem and exposed how the playfulness and unconditional love between teenage couples destruct the happiness of their lives and their surroundings. The serious tone after the tragedy with a hard-hitting climax gave a heavy-hearted feel that the movie aimed for creating awareness.

6. Kalyana Samayal Saadham

What happens when a person comes to know about his erectile dysfunction after his engagement is the engaging story of Kalyana Samayal Saadham. The film explored many traditional taboo topics around the ceremony of marriage and also reflected the mindset of the current-gen couple to an extent. Completely coated with a humorous feel, the movie stood out as a family entertainer, delivering a refreshing experience.

5. OK Kanmani

OK Kanmani was barely the first movie in Tamil that took the concept of live-in relationship to the attention of a greater audience. This sensible plot was handled maturely by Director Mani Ratnam that made the film enjoyable and to an extent, and acceptable by the audience of our traditional society.

4. Goa

Director – Venkat Prabhu

This Venkat Prabhu directorial is about the lives of three youngsters traveling to Goa for the sake of enjoyment, and it also had a narrative of a gay relationship in its narration. Even though the relationship was treated comically, it showed the feelings of that couple decently and enjoyably. The plot set up in Goa was an added advantage for Venkat Prabhu to discuss many explicit topics throughout the movie, as Goa is a fun-filled experience.

3. Boys

Starring – Siddharth, Genelia D’Souza
Director – Shankar
Streaming Platform – MX Player

The movie Boys was a complete outing of a group of teenagers involving their struggles, friendship, love, sexuality, and many more problems faced by them. Besides the criticism, the movie touched many situations from the youngster’s point of view, and Director Shankar, for the first time in his career centered a movie around young adults and provided an elegant feel to the film, which turned it more engaging.

2. Aruvi

Another movie that spoke about the struggles faced by a woman in our society, but this time in a bold manner. The movie’s plot was simple, a revenge story of a girl who faced several harassments, but the brilliant writing with a strong lead character delivered an exciting and thrilling experience. Many sensible issues were brought to light in the movie cleverly and made Aruvi one of the finest works in Tamil.

Mirugam is a one-of-a-kind movie that tried to create awareness among the audience about AIDS. The film, knitted with various complicated relations, and sex, is about a rugged villager being desperate for sexual pleasure throughout his life. The movie travels in a way to propagate love and affection but gets overloaded with explicit content. Nevertheless, it is a watchable drama for its motto.
