The Spy

The Spy Netflix Review

Cast – Sacha Baron Cohen, Noah Emmerich
Genre – Espionage Thriller
Release Date – September 6, 2019
Status – Ended

Gideon Raff, who previously directed a decent film in The Red Sea Diving Resort returned to the director’s chair for The Spy. This six-episode mini-series narrates the tragic journey of an Israeli spy who infiltrates the Syrian government to learn about the threats targeting his home country.

Based on true events, one of the primary attributes which favor the mini-series is the six-episode structure. As a result, the narrative moves on a swift pace and keeps up the intrigue factor. Furthermore, the well-written characters also complement the narrative decently along with the performances. Sacha Baron Cohen carries the entire show on his shoulders as you can’t help but feel for his character and everything he’s going through in life. It is a nice contrast to watch him shine in a different role and he displays his impeccable acting chops remarkably.

On the whole, The Spy is, without a doubt, one of the Best Series on Netflix that keeps you hooked with its intriguing narrative and well-built characters. Watch it for the story and Sacha Baron Cohen and you’ll not be disappointed. – Surya Komal

Unbelievable on Netflix is one of the very few and one of the Best Series on Netflix that takes the subject very seriously. The pain, agony and the stress each of these characters strived through to fight their internal and external demons was illustrated masterfully throughout all the episodes. Russian Doll

Russian Doll Netflix HD

Cast – Natasha Lyonne, Charlie Barnett
Genre – Comedy, Drama, Time Travel
Release Date – February 1, 2019
Status – Renewed

[This excerpt comes from Anushree’s ‘Top 5 New Shows on Netflix You Shouldn’t Miss’ Article]

We have seen the time loop type stories done in films and television, including the greatest of them all: Groundhog Day. So much so that it is difficult to do anything truly original in this genre yet somehow Russian Doll manages to achieve exactly that. The show stars Lyonne as Nadia, a 36-year-old New Yorker, who is stuck in a time loop where every time she dies she ends up in the same place.

The rest of the show follows her journey of life, death, and resurrections. Every iteration of the loop feels fresh and adds to the story, ensuring that you are never bored. This show which is undoubtedly one of the Best Series on Netflix of this year has witty, dark humor which when delivered by the incomparable Lyonne as Nadia is both funny and poignant.

The Umbrella Academy

The Umbrella Academy Wallpaper

Cast – Natasha Lyonne, Charlie Barnett
Genre – Black Comedy, Superhero
Release Date – February 15, 2019
Status – Renewed

[This excerpt comes from Anushree’s ‘The Umbrella Academy’ Review]

The new superhero web series by Netflix is weird and yet engaging. If that sounds like an unusual description, that is because this is an unusual show. It is an adaptation of the comics of the same name created by Gerard Way, the frontman for My Chemical Romance and Gabriel Bá and has been developed for Netflix by Steve Blackman (Fargo, Altered Carbon).

There is much to love about this show. The fight scenes are very stylishly choreographed and have a lot of flairs. The special effects are top-notch, especially in the scenes that have gory visual gags. The music is wonderfully weird which help ties even the most eccentric scenes together. The writing is uneven at times but the wicked humor makes up for some of it. The season does finish on a cliffhanger which creates some mystery at the end and sets up the series nicely for a future potential Season 2.

Delhi Crime

Cast – Shefali Shah, Rasika Dugal, Rajesh Tailang
Genre – Crime, Drama
Release Date – March 22, 2019
Status – Renewed

[This excerpt comes from Surya’s ‘Delhi Crime’ Review]

Created by Richie Mehta, Delhi Crime, distributed by Netflix details the aftermath and the severe consequences of the December 2012 Delhi gang-rape incident (widely known as the Nirbhaya case). Based primarily on the police case-files, the narrative kicks-off on the 16th December night when the cops encountered the male and the female victims near the Mahipalpur flyover and push on with the investigation, capturing the criminals and with nationwide protests and pressure.

Delhi Crime is an engrossing, no-nonsense depiction of one of the most heinous crimes ever committed. It succeeds in illustrating the vibe and the hastiness of the city accurately and drives the captivating narrative with well-established characters and magnificent performances. One of the Best Series on Netflix that no one should ever miss!

The Society

Cast – Kathryn Newton, Gideon Adlon
Genre – Mystery, Teen Drama
Release Date – May 10, 2019
Status – Renewed

[This excerpt comes from Siddharthen’s ‘The Society’ Review]

The Society revolves around a large group of students who believe they are departing on a school trip and are instead dropped off at town very much like their own with no adults or younger children present. An amalgamation of the TV show Lost and the classic novel Lord of the Flies, The Society delves into the concept of survival and it basks in its disturbing nature.

The show draws you in by making the audience reflect on existential questions and it is to be recommended that the series should not be binged-watched in a day as it can get pretty heavy. Entertaining, intense and distressing, The Society provokes, keeps you on edge and leave you breathless.

When They See Us

when they see us netflix

Cast – Asante Blackk, Caleel Harris
Genre – Drama
Release Date – May 31, 2019
Status – Ended

[This excerpt comes from Siddharthen’s ‘When They See Us’ Review]

Writer/director Ava DuVernay’s four-part Netflix miniseries When They See Us is a timely reminder of a fragmented justice system and black prejudice that still exists in America. Built on true events and the 2012 documentary, The Central Park Five, When They See Us develops beyond the manifest content of racism and injustice and portrays the feelings and the struggles of the wrongfully accused boys and their families.

When They See Us asks the hard questions and makes you think. What is it like to look dead in the eyes of authority and feel helpless knowing that there is absolutely no one out there to save you? One of the Best Series on Netflix that takes a look at systematic racism, the effects and the cause, strikes a note with its spellbinding performance and compelling storytelling.

Stranger Things 3

stranger things starcourt mall

Cast – Winona Ryder, David Harbour
Genre – Sci-Fi, Horror
Release Date – July 4, 2019
Status – Renewed

[This excerpt comes from Surya’s ‘Stranger Things 3’ Review]

Created by the Duffer Brothers, Netflix’s Stranger Things is the streaming platform’s biggest show to date as the first two seasons created enormous buzz, pop culture references and presented us with delightful characters and masterful storytelling. Released on Jul 4, 2019, Stranger Things 3, is no different. It is filled with nostalgia, charming character moments and brings together everything we loved in the previous two seasons.

The show entertains and is a perfect season to binge when you’re on a festive mood. Although the overall story doesn’t advance all that much, the show is overloaded with 80s nostalgia, cheerful comedy, memorable, funny and emotional character moments, majestic production design and an uplifting soundtrack which will not leave you bored even for a single second. A compelling science fiction-horror-drama which knows and delivers on exactly what the viewers want.

GLOW Season 3

Cast – Alison Brie, Betty Gilpin
Genre – Comedy, Drama, Sports
Release Date – August 9, 2019
Status – Pending

[This excerpt comes from Anushree’s ‘GLOW Season 3’ Review]

A few months ago, we recommended GLOW as one of the must-watch shows on streaming with a predominantly female cast. If you have not seen the show, you are missing out on one of the most entertaining shows on Netflix. Some people may feel turned off by GLOW due to the premise of female wrestling but don’t be deterred. The human stories, especially in seasons 2 and 3, are far more center stage for this show. The 10 episode season structure does a lot of good for a show like this. The writers can tell the story without too many filler episodes to pad the count, keeping the storytelling very taut.

Through the last 3 years, GLOW has continued to be the show that marries emotional stories with great comic timing. The new season just confirms that (at the risk of repeating myself) GLOW is one of the Best Series on Netflix and one of the smartest shows currently on TV. Here’s hoping that it scores a renewal from Netflix, but even if it does not – I heartily recommend the show and this season to anyone who enjoys clever storytelling with a side of humor with a dash of 80’s nostalgia.

Sacred Games 2

pankaj tripathi in sacred games 2

Cast – Saif Ali Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui
Genre – Crime, Thriller
Release Date – August 15, 2019
Status – Pending

[This excerpt comes from Surya’s ‘Sacred Games 2’ Review]

Back in 2018, Season 1 of Sacred Games was considered as one of the Best Series on Netflix for all the right reasons. It garnered tons of following not only because of the stellar cast but, also because of the realistic vibe, masterful storytelling and appealing characters. Fast forward to the sunny summer of 2019, the promos for Sacred Games 2 caught the viewers attention and the substantial doubt of not having a second season quickly disappeared.

Sacred Games 2 shines bright when it comes to developing the lead characters and flawlessly showcasing them on-screen. Furthermore, the storyline also had enough intrigue, gripping scenes as the show is easily binge-able. Nevertheless, the slow pacing and a few writing issues might hurt or blemish your sky-high expectations.

So, do you have any suggestions or picks which should be added to this Best Series on Netflix list? Comment and let us know!
