YOU Season 1 Review: One of the Most Addictive Series’ on Netflix!

YOU is all about Joe Goldberg and his love obsession – Beck. 2018, American psycho-thriller television series did a number on our ethics quotient. All the viewers fall in love with Joe- the psycho-killer, who is delusional, obsessive and highly toxic with a golden heart and a soft smile.

In season 1, we are introduced to Joe, the bookstore manager who is a keen observer, a social media stalker and your ultimate nightmare. He immediately falls in love with his customer – Guinevere Beck, a student and an aspiring writer who has a normal life. Joe stalks her everywhere: on social media, her house and evening hangout places where she often meets her rich set of best friends- Peach, Lynn, and Annika.

To make himself her “the One”, Joe finds all the obstacles that keep her away from him and goes to lengths to remove them; he goes as far as killing them in real while sending them (Benji and Candace) to faraway places on the internet.

Joe has a cell; a creepy soundproof, glass enclosure – a vault in the basement of the bookstore where he cages his obstacles and finds ways to get rid of them. Enticing, alluring and intoxicating tricks played by Joe mostly work as Beck falls in love with him eventually, while some mistakes come back to bite him. In these situations, the book vault comes at his rescue as Joe cages some of them and murders the rest.

Joe keeps count – Benji, Peach, Ron, Dr. Nicky. Finally, in an electrifying climax, Joe locks Beck in the vault and we see the bipolar personalities of Joe Goldberg as he comes out vividly, when he showcases his undying obsession for her and self-satisfying arguments for his behavior.

The self-conversation going on in Joe’s mind keeps the viewers on their toes. While the colors and lights are used efficiently throughout the series, as they are sunny and tan during the happy moments, while the dark and thrilling moments are caught in blues and black.
