The Spy

Gideon Raff, who previously directed a decent film in The Red Sea Diving Resort returned to the director’s chair for The Spy. This six-episode mini-series narrates the tragic journey of an Israeli spy who infiltrates the Syrian government to learn about the threats targeting his home country.

Based on true events, one of the primary attributes which favor the mini-series is the six-episode structure. As a result, the narrative moves on a swift pace and keeps up the intrigue factor. Furthermore, the well-written characters also complement the narrative decently along with the performances. Sacha Baron Cohen carries the entire show on his shoulders as you can’t help but feel for his character and everything he’s going through in life. It is a nice contrast to watch him shine in a different role and he displays his impeccable acting chops remarkably.

On the whole, The Spy is, without a doubt, one of the Best Series on Netflix that keeps you hooked with its intriguing narrative and well-built characters. Watch it for the story and Sacha Baron Cohen and you’ll not be disappointed. – Surya Komal

Unbelievable

A gem distributed by Netflix for the true-crime aficionados, Unbelievable created by Susannah Grant, Ayelet Waldman and Michael Chabon stars Toni Collette, Merritt Wever and Kaitlyn Dever in the lead roles. And the series is based on reporting by T. Christian Miller and Ken Armstrong originally published by ProPublica and The Marshall Project. The premise of the show is regarding a series of rapes which took place in the states Washington, and Colorado between 2008 and 2011 where random women went through their worst nightmares in the most horrible ways possible.

Unbelievable on Netflix is one of the very few and one of the Best Series on Netflix that takes the subject very seriously. The pain, agony and the stress each of these characters strived through to fight their internal and external demons was illustrated masterfully throughout all the episodes. The realistic approach and the relatable characters also make it appealing and disturbing to watch at the same time as this is one of the best shows, if not the best show released on Netflix this year. The extremely talented cast delivers a refreshing take on high school and despite being the nudity and explicit scenes, this is a coming-of-age story. We have seen the time loop type stories done in films and television, including the greatest of them all: Groundhog Day. So much so that it is difficult to do anything truly original in this genre yet somehow Russian Doll manages to achieve exactly that. The show stars Lyonne as Nadia, a 36-year-old New Yorker, who is stuck in a time loop where every time she dies she ends up in the same place.

The rest of the show follows her journey of life, death, and resurrections. Every iteration of the loop feels fresh and adds to the story, ensuring that you are never bored. This show which is undoubtedly one of the Best Series on Netflix of this year has witty, dark humor which when delivered by the incomparable Lyonne as Nadia is both funny and poignant.

The Umbrella Academy

The new superhero web series by Netflix is weird and yet engaging. If that sounds like an unusual description, that is because this is an unusual show. It is an adaptation of the comics of the same name created by Gerard Way, the frontman for My Chemical Romance and Gabriel Bá and has been developed for Netflix by Steve Blackman (Fargo, Altered Carbon).

There is much to love about this show. The fight scenes are very stylishly choreographed and have a lot of flairs. The special effects are top-notch, especially in the scenes that have gory visual gags. The music is wonderfully weird which help ties even the most eccentric scenes together. The writing is uneven at times but the wicked humor makes up for some of it. The season does finish on a cliffhanger which creates some mystery at the end and sets up the series nicely for a future potential Season 2.

It succeeds in illustrating the vibe and the hastiness of the city accurately and drives the captivating narrative with well-established characters and magnificent performances. The show entertains and is a perfect season to binge when you’re on a festive mood. Although the overall story doesn’t advance all that much, the show is overloaded with 80s nostalgia, cheerful comedy, memorable, funny and emotional character moments, majestic production design and an uplifting soundtrack which will not leave you bored even for a single second. A compelling science fiction-horror-drama which knows and delivers on exactly what the viewers want.

A few months ago, we recommended GLOW as one of the must-watch shows on streaming with a predominantly female cast. If you have not seen the show, you are missing out on one of the most entertaining shows on Netflix. Some people may feel turned off by GLOW due to the premise of female wrestling but don’t be deterred. The human stories, especially in seasons 2 and 3, are far more center stage for this show. The 10 episode season structure does a lot of good for a show like this. The writers can tell the story without too many filler episodes to pad the count, keeping the storytelling very taut.

Through the last 3 years, GLOW has continued to be the show that marries emotional stories with great comic timing. The new season just confirms that (at the risk of repeating myself) GLOW is one of the Best Series on Netflix and one of the smartest shows currently on TV. Here’s hoping that it scores a renewal from Netflix, but even if it does not – I heartily recommend the show and this season to anyone who enjoys clever storytelling with a side of humor with a dash of 80’s nostalgia.

Back in 2018, Season 1 of Sacred Games was considered as one of the Best Series on Netflix for all the right reasons. It garnered tons of following not only because of the stellar cast but, also because of the realistic vibe, masterful storytelling and appealing characters. Fast forward to the sunny summer of 2019, the promos for Sacred Games 2 caught the viewers attention and the substantial doubt of not having a second season quickly disappeared.

Sacred Games 2 shines bright when it comes to developing the lead characters and flawlessly showcasing them on-screen. Furthermore, the storyline also had enough intrigue, gripping scenes as the show is easily binge-able. Nevertheless, the slow pacing and a few writing issues might hurt or blemish your sky-high expectations.
