Top 5 Unconventional Romantic Movies of Bollywood
Unconventional Romantic Movies: Bollywood has a collection of mushy Bollywood drama but some unconventional movies are effortlessly romantic. They have a distinct way of expressing love, unlike the usual typical stuff – like the dupatta getting stuck in a man’s watch (secret dream of all of us though) or our Palat, Palat, Palat! I love watching these offbeat movies.
Thankfully, the content in our film industry is changing, and now we can experience some relative content that isn’t mushy but is an exact definition of love. Though love remains intact in the tales of Bollywood the style of expressing it has changed a bit. Here is a list of five films that depicted a love story, but in an unconventional way. Albeit, the list is not exhaustive. Presenting the Top 5 Unconventional Romantic Movies of Bollywood.

1. Guzaarish
Director – Sanjay Leela Bhansali
Starring – Hrithik Roshan & Aishwarya Rai Bachchan
Streaming Platform – Netflix
Odds are that you have heard about the film. Hrithik Roshan proved it yet again that his art is par excellence through Guzaarish. He plays a quadriplegic guy, and a former magician named Ethan who files a petition in court seeking permission to end his life. Sofia played by Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is his caretaker for the past twelve years and also supports him with this plea. Can you love someone to the limit that you want him to die? This story is its biggest example. Instead of thinking about her love for Ethan, Sofia was worried about his misery and wanted him to die.
2. Barfi
Director – Anurag Basu
Starring – Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra Jonas
Streaming Platform – Netflix
Unconventional Romantic Movies: At first, it was tough for the audience to accept Barfi because it was an almost mute film. A story about three beloveds who will teach us that love can neither be defined nor contained by society’s definition of normal and abnormal. Everyone had their definition of love and my personal favorite was that of Barfi, played by Ranbir Kapoor. He used to cut the lamp posts to check the trust people have on him. Dumb, but sweet!

3. De De Pyaar De
Director – Akiv Ali
Starring – Ajay Devgn, Rakul Preet Singh
Streaming Platform – Hotstar
This might be a shocker for you on the list but, De De Pyaar De portrays a different story. I won’t deny the fact that I watched the film only because of the comic content. I always thought that Ashish (played by Ajay Devgn) will end up with Manju (played by Tabu). Happy Ending! No, they proved me wrong by stating the fact that love doesn’t understand the age difference. The only definition of love understands is that of understanding and care.
4. Black
Director – Sanjay Leela Bhansali
Starring – Amitabh Bachchan, Rani Mukerji
Unconventional Romantic Movies: This would probably be the best pick for the list. Black released in 2005 and was way ahead of its time. Debraj (played by Amitabh Bachchan) turns an uncontrollable child into a human named Michelle (played by Rani Mukerji). She starts feeling for her teacher but he is suffering from Alzheimer’s and doesn’t recognize her. It was the purest form of love story which started with Debraj teaching Michelle and ended at Michelle teaching her teacher his first words yet again.

5. The Lunchbox
Director – Ritesh Batra
Starring – Irrfan Khan & Nimrat Kaur
Streaming Platform – Netflix
The Lunchbox is probably one film that depicts the bond of love and fellowship gracefully, even though the protagonists in the film never meet. Their love blossoms through letters that they write to each other. The exchange of the messages sent back and forth with the lunches ignites a friendship between the two. Their relationship can’t be defined but it was surely a strong bond of care and compassion. It was charming, whimsical, and a mature tale of love.
