My October 2022 Watchlist: Halloween, Hocus Pocus & More! – Journal with Yas #16

This month I took part in Spooktober where I aimed to watch one Halloween movie a day. I did three Halloween journal entries this year so make sure to check them out if you haven’t already! Kicking it off with some Disney Halloween classics, I re-watched Hocus Pocus and the Halloweentown series. This time of year belongs to Tim Burton, so of course I had to watch some of his movies! For the first time I watched Sleepy Hollow and Frankenweenie, but ultimately The Nightmare for Christmas is my favourite – I haven’t watched this in fifteen years so it felt like I was viewing it for the first time!

Trying to lean more into the slasher classics, I finally watched the Scream franchise which I loved a lot! I enjoy how these combine horror with comedy and I’m really fond of the characters and it’s casting. I felt the fifth movie did really well in keeping it rooted to the original, yet also making it fresh and modern. Next was the Halloween franchise which I just don’t enjoy that much. I do prefer the newer films (unpopular opinion, I know) and I had a good time with the final Halloween Ends release.

I also included some not-so-scary watches this month. I was very excited for The School for Good and Evil and had the best time attending the special preview screening with all of our local cast and crew who spent four months shooting this back in spring/summer of 2021! A new release which I adored was The Banshees of Inisherin – it made me laugh and cry and was overall a very Irish film that was so enjoyable.

For TV shows I really wanted to watch some scary series, however, after only making it 10 minutes into The Haunting of Hill House I realised this just wasn’t going to happen. I completed the fourth and final seasons of The Royals (journal review in the works) and Bloodlands S2 (which I enjoyed more than the first). I enjoyed Under the Banner of Heaven and found it super interesting – I love shows where I feel I’ve actually learned something from and this was definitely that. Andrew Garfield’s acting was great also!
