Live Telecast Review: A Poorly Produced Soap Opera!

Live Telecast on Disney+ Hotstar was supposedly Venkat Prabhu’s debut movie script that he developed into a web series during the 2020 COVID-19 era. Starring Kajal Aggarwal in the lead role, the seven-episode horror show explores the journey of her character, Jenifer Matthew, a television director, who is willing to do anything to win the TRP game. Subsequently, when her horror-related show gets canceled for not being family-friendly, she manages to put-together another over-the-top horror show and plans to do it live-on-air in a haunted mansion.

Starting with the narrative of Live Telecast, the whole writing aspect of the show felt amateur. From the initial setup to the development and the conclusion, the story beats did not feel compelling at any duration as the entire premise felt comical and clichéd. Nothing felt serious on the show as the scream-comically-when-you-see-a-shadow aspect took away that element of scare or horror and made it more difficult to binge through.

The characters on Live Telecast were unrelatable and did not maintain a single intriguing aspect to care about. Kajal Aggarwal, on the other hand, at least keeps you calm from yelling at Disney+ Hotstar for the dreadful content with her glamorous screen presence. Once again, her character had zero dimensions and carried the standard “do not give a flying fuck” boss traits that could have been easily avoided by the writer.

Moving on to Kajal’s performance on the show, it felt like she’s placed in an unfamiliar situation as she overplayed her character with over-the-top expressions that did not feel authentic and dialogue delivery that carried a generic tone. As far as the remainder of the cast goes, Vaibhav Reddy stood out from the rest with his decent ability to act and not look all that stupid at the same time, and I wish his character had depth in a superior way.

If you’re looking forward to having a decent scare, do not even consider watching this show as I’m guessing we all moved past the “contact lens” ghosts era. The comedy on the show is equally bad, provided no laughs, and is also misogynistic at times. Nonetheless, this is an overall horrible directorial effort by Venkat Prabhu, and I understand the budget limits and the COVID restrictions he had to get through, but there are multiple technical, effortlessly avoidable issues with the show he did not care to focus on and improve.

Overall, Live Telecast on Disney+ Hotstar treats you like an idiot for taking time off your day to watch some South Indian content. The show had zero cliffhangers, nothing overly engaging to binge or characters and moments that you can at least laugh at. It felt like a poorly produced soap opera suited for an afternoon slot on a channel that you didn’t even know exists. Watch ‘Live Telecast’ on Disney+ Hotstar here.
