The latest Hercule Poirot adaption tells the story of the 1937 novel of the same name by Agatha Christie and is the third telling of this particular novel on the silver screen. Hercule Poirot the greatest detective to ever live (according to him) must solve a mysterious murder that takes place along the Nile. Poirot’s vacation in Egypt must be cut short to solve this intricate murder.

I saw this film this week and I found it an enjoyable yet possibly forgettable film. There were some great moments during this film but there is also stagnant pacing at times. I thought this film took awhile to find its footing but once it did I was extremely invested. The film takes off in its 3rd act supply us with many gut punches and twists. The directing by Kenneth Branagh is really good as usual. Branagh does a terrific job. He is known as a really solid director and his work here is more than solid.

As far as the writing goes, as I said before I believe this film could have been paced better. I found it boring at times but otherwise it was a fine script. The big question is how does it compare to it’s predecessor Murder on the Orient Express and to be honest this is nearly the same film (quality wise) this film may be slightly better, as they learned some things from the first film. If your a fan of the first film and Kenneth Branagh’s portrayal of the great Hercule Poirot you will certainly enjoy this one. This film gives those fans exactly what they want.

As for me, I found both films okay. I love a great Murder Mystery so I’m always willing to give a film like this a watch and certainly contribute to the box office so more murder mysteries are made. Knives Out is what I compare these two films to… but Knives Out is the superior film.

Now on to the performances Kenneth Branagh is really good. Everyone else is good as well. Other standouts include Armie Hammer, Gal Gadot, Sophie Okonedo and Tom Bateman. While I seem like I didn’t like this film I really did enjoy it. I had a fun time at the movies for sure. It’s just compared to other films in the genre I can’t help but want more especially from such a great novel. I’m going to give Death on the Nile a 3/5.
