Succession S3 Review: Concludes with an Explosive Finale!

HBO’s award winning titan returned late last year and season three continues right where we left off, Kendall making a huge power play to wrest his father’s company from his control. I honestly don’t know what Kendall thinks he’s doing. The stakes are extremely high if he loses and he doesn’t have a plan… needless to say, this season was definitely an emotional journey.

The writer’s pen is remarkable in this series and it shows in its characters. The relationship between them is fractured, complicated and real. They’re all horrible people really and inspite of that, we feel for them at times even as we’re disgusted most of it. Much of this season has been about exploring how the kids fight each other instead of their common enemy, their father. It also highlights that even though they’re grown adults, they still cower in fear of him due to the deep-rooted childhood trauma he inflicted on them.

One of the reasons Logan Roy is so powerful is because he controls the biggest media conglomerate which means he essentially has a hand in shaping the news, media and politics. Logan didn’t get to where he is being soft or sentimental. If his children want his company, they’re going to have to pry it from his cold, dead hands.

As always, I’m impressed by the superb camera work and settings that not only evoke emotion but place viewers right in the room with the Roys. The set design itself remains a stunning display of obscene wealth porn that perfectly encapsulate their world, so far removed from our own.

I liked that they highlight the favouritism of Siobhan not only as the only daughter but also someone who’s palatable to the media. With the sexual harassment lawsuit looming, her father has never leaned on her more. As the season progresses however, I think Shiv slowly begins to realise that when it comes to her father’s favour, she’s gonna have to fight right along with her brothers.

The season concludes with an explosive finale, leaving us all wondering where exactly any of the Roy kids stand. From its cast and characters to its writing, setting and backdrop. Succession combines all the elements to give viewers a small window into the life of the extremely wealthy. Watch ‘Succession’ on Disney+ Hotstar here.
