Snowpiercer S1 and S2 Review: A Dynamic Dystopian Sci-Fi!

I actually really liked the movie that this show is based on. Snowpiercer is a layered and dynamic dystopian sci-fi starring Daveed Diggs as Andre Layton, a stowaway on board Snowpiercer 1001 cars. Global warming throws humanity into another ice age and the inhabitants of Snowpiercer are all that remain. This magnificent train built and operated by a tycoon of the age Joseph Wilford, circles the globe and can never really stop or everyone will freeze to death.

The same premise as the film really but I like how they were able to expand making it something all its own. The class system is an integral part of the plot. The train is divided into 1st, 2nd, 3rd class passengers and the stowaways who form the tail end of the train. The train’s “voice” Melanie Cavill played by Jennifer Connelly, must maintain order and “civility” amongst the classes amidst growing contempt and dissention.

As mentioned, a great portion of this series is centered around classism. The train itself acts as the embodiment of capitalism. For example, tickets were sold to the highest bidders and even on board the train exists a wide resource disparity amongst the classes.

Snowpiercer Season 1 and 2 Review

In this new world however, where money means nothing, classism is used as a tool to perpetuate a system of order. One that’s very loosely held together and on the verge of snapping like a rubber band. Not unlike society right now.

There is also a distinct religious undertone as no longer do I see people worship gods but rather the train itself as though it were a deity. To them, the train is life. The casting is stellar and each character brings something unique to the story.

By far the most interesting character is Melanie. A very layered and dynamic woman, nothing is ever as it seems with her. She can often be seen to outsiders as cold, calculating and even magnanimous at times. I often questioned, does Melanie think she’s doing what’s best or is she just power hungry? Is she wrong in her ideals or is she justified in her actions?

Snowpiercer showcases those who have the courage to do what’s right and to rebel against tyranny but it also poses another moral dilemma. If the Rebels led by Andre succeed, what then? Watch ‘Snowpiercer’ on Netflix here.

‘Snowpiercer S1 and S2’ Rating – 4/5
