Seance Review: Bogged Down by a Ridiculous Plotline!

I’m not a fan of horror movies, to be honest. I find most of them to be silly, especially slasher films. (I was expecting something paranormal, but this is most definitely a slasher film.) However, in the interest of keeping my reviews as diverse as possible genre-wise, I decided to watch Seance starring Suki Waterhouse.

Waterhouse plays Camille, a Catholic school girl at a new boarding school that’s said to be haunted by the ghost of a former student. To make things even spookier, another student died a few weeks before Camille’s arrival in the same room Camille will be staying in. Six other girls invite her to play their midnight Ouija game, where they call forth the spirits of the dead. And I think you can tell where it goes from here.

A large part of this Seance was very unrealistic. twenty minutes in, I was already regretting my choice to even watch it actually but I soldiered on for you guys. While the film utilizes all the cinematic elements of any good slasher flick, it’s devoid of any real substance.

Seance Movie Review

The acting is decent at best, and no one really stands out. I feel like the pacing was also good, so it wasn’t as painful as I had anticipated. The camera work leaves a lot to be desired though. The relationship between Camille and Helina (played by Ella-Rae Smith) was probably the only believable part of this film, and I liked its development. It’s a good thing that all the other girls are of different races/ethnicities because their characters are so generic it would be otherwise difficult to tell them apart.

Seance is really a waste of time seeing as it’s bogged down with a ridiculous plotline and a predictable climax. In my mind, there’s not much you can really do to make a teen slasher film good (the genre pretty much died in 2007), but they still managed to make all the clichéd mistakes you can think of with this one. ‘Seance’ Rating – 1.5/5
