S86 Review: An Earnest Indie Survival Horror!
Independent horror often lives or dies by how creatively it works around its limitations, and S86 is one of those films where the effort behind the camera is just as noticeable as what’s happening in front of it. Directed by J. Lee Vertz, this 70-minute psychological horror and sci-fi thriller doesn’t pretend to be a large-scale studio production. Instead, it embraces its indie roots, making the most of the resources available to tell a gritty survival story about unethical experimentation, corporate greed, and the consequences of scientific ambition. While the film doesn’t reinvent its genre, there’s determination behind its execution that makes it a decent watch.

The story follows Dr. Jensen, a scientist caught in the aftermath of a pharmaceutical experiment gone horribly wrong. After helping create Subject 13, a human transformed into a relentless biological weapon through the experimental Solution 86, Jensen finds himself betrayed by the very corporation he worked for. Released into the wilderness as live prey, he must survive a brutal game of cat and mouse while confronting both the monster he helped create and the moral consequences of his own actions.
What stood out most to me wasn’t necessarily the story itself, but the execution. Throughout the film, there’s a clear sense of, “Let’s make the absolute best use of the limited budget we have.” You can tell there are constraints in almost every department, yet rather than feeling like the filmmakers gave up because of them, it feels like they leaned into creative solutions wherever possible. That determination gives S86 a certain charm that many independent productions strive for.
The editing, also by J. Lee Vertz deserves particular mention. The fast-cut, energetic pacing helps maintain momentum and keeps the film moving even when the narrative treads familiar ground. The opening’s non-linear structure immediately creates intrigue, allowing the audience to slowly uncover what led to Jensen’s nightmare instead of relying on lengthy exposition. The camera movements also add urgency to the survival sequences, while the visual effects and practical horror elements, although not flawless, show genuine ambition.

I also found myself enjoying the subplot involving Carter and Graves, played by Daniel Anderson and Giovanny Vazquez. Their dynamic adds a welcome layer to the film beyond the central chase. One is focused purely on completing the mission and earning the paycheck, while the other begins questioning the morality of everything they’re involved in. Those conversations help reinforce the film’s larger themes about corporate responsibility and the human cost of treating people as disposable assets. It’s a small part of the story, but one that adds some much-needed character perspective amid the chaos.
If I had one major criticism, it’s that I wanted the story itself to push further. The premise of a scientist being hunted by his own creation is an effective setup, but it’s also one we’ve seen explored in different forms over the years. Because of that familiarity, I kept waiting for the narrative to introduce a stronger twist or develop greater emotional and psychological tension. The themes of corporate corruption, survival, and guilt are all present, but they never fully evolve into something more memorable. There’s certainly enough material here to build a more layered thriller, and I couldn’t help but feel the film only scratches the surface of its potential.

In the end, S86 may not break new ground within psychological sci-fi horror, but it succeeds as an earnest independent production that demonstrates how passion and creativity can often outweigh budgetary limitations. It leaves you appreciating not just the film itself, but the determination of the people who brought it to life.
