Kappela and Asuraguru – Movie Reviews
Director Muhammad Musthafa’s 2020 film – Kappela has one of the best-written screenplays in recent times. The entire movie revolves around an innocent girl, Jessie (Anna Ben), who accidentally calls an auto driver Vishnu (Roshan Mathew) on her phone, and the relationship blossoms between them. When they finally decide to meet each other, Vishnu’s phone goes missing and lands in the hands of another person. And the remainder of the film showcases whether or not the couple meets each other in an engaging 120-minute romantic drama.
Packed with a myriad of positive attributes, the natural performances of Anna Ben and Roshan Mathew add the much-needed spiritedness to the film. Jimshi Khalid’s cinematography beautifully captures the elegance of Kozhikode and its surrounding locales. Also, Sushin Shyam’s melodies and background score assisted in setting the right mood for the narrative. On the other side, director Musthafa handles his characters splendidly, and with a well- written screenplay, he delivers an engaging drama you should not miss on any given day. Asuraguru is one of the few Kollywood movies that missed its extended theatrical audience due to the COVID-19 lockdown and made its way to the global streaming giant, Netflix. This money heist thriller directed by Debutant Rajdeep stars Vikram Prabhu and Mahima Nambiar in lead roles.
And the storyline of the film displays the protagonist of the movie Sakthi (Vikram Prabhu), working at a courier service, steals a massive amount of money with a perfect plan as soon as he goes through an unpleasant and mental discomfort. With the specially designated cop, Manickavasagam (Subbaraju), and Detective Diya (Mahima Nambiar) in the hunt for Sakthi, the rest of the film explores his side of the story, and why he intended to commit the heist.
With quite a few drawbacks, Asuraguru suffers through and through to narrate a decent story. The curiosity created during the beginning of the film gets misdirected by an unconvincing flashback with many deviations in the narration. The simple and familiar burglary scenes without any sort of clarity are also one of the many negatives. Overall, although Asuraguru has an intriguing premise, it turns out to be an average thriller, due to the poor execution and below-par performances and technicalities.
