Cocktail Tamil Movie Review: A Dreadful Comedy!

Cocktail Tamil Movie Review: Kollywood, as an industry, embraced the idea of releasing their films directly on the OTT platforms during this pandemic era with Jyothika starrer Ponmagal Vandhal and Penguin with Keerthy Suresh in the lead role witnessing some sort of moderate success on Amazon Prime Video. Now, on the other hand, in the inferior quality world of ZEE5, here comes Cocktail, a comedy-drama starring Yogi Babu, that tried to entertain us in this tumultuous situation, but whether it has fulfilled its task or not is a big question mark. Cocktail opens up with a brief history of a 450-year-old valuable Lord Murugan idol, that goes missing from a local museum, and Inspector Rajamanikam, played by Sayaji Shinde, is offered the job to track down the sculpture, within a deadline. In the meanwhile, Don (Yogi Babu) and his friends catch up for Anbu’s (Mithun Mageshwaran) bachelor’s party who is about to get married to the daughter of Inspector Rajamanikam, but, right after the festivities, they discover a dead body of a girl in their house. The remainder of the narrative details the interconnection between these two subplots within the 127-minute runtime. Cocktail Tamil Movie Cocktail Tamil Movie Review

Yogi Babu in Cocktail Tamil Movie

Yogi Babu plays the lead character – Don, who runs a saloon for animals (sometimes for humans) and tries to carry the movie with his usual over dozed one-liners and counter dialogues. On the other hand, Mithun Mageshwaran, in a miny heroic role, did a decent job within his available screen-time. Also, the character of Pandi played by KPY Bala offered the much-needed comedic relief for the movie with the Karagaatakaran fame Soppanasundari car. Furthermore, the film also managed to garner some attention for using the Cockatiel bird for the first time, but it went unused like the female leads, except for a couple of situations that offered little to no significance to the overall narrative.

Debutant director Ra. Vijaya Murugan attempted to deliver an entertainer without many distractions, but the mundane execution made the storyline suffer through and through. Be it the crime scene or an emotional one, the carefree performances of the actors kept me detached with the narrative, and occasionally giggle only for the funny moments.

There are quite a few instances where a scene, if written well, could have been a laugh riot, but they fell flat for the most part. And most importantly, the awful pacing of the film, which should not be happening in a comedy-drama, added to the list of glaring negatives that are easily avoidable. Furthermore, the cringe references of the Kollywood actors and the rhyming dialogues turned out irritating at many places. Cocktail Tamil Movie Cocktail Tamil Movie Review

Excluding than the two songs which tested my patience, the music did not disturb me very much, and the climax that is finished at a rapid pace with some twists and turns manages to give a smooth ending to this tiring ride. With a promising story for a comedy-drama, unadulterated comedy, and decent writing, Cocktail could have been a better overall product with an added focus on the execution alongside a few intriguing scenes.
