The Ice Road Review: A Mediocre Action Movie!

The Ice Road, the 2021 Netflix Original directed by Jonathan Hensleigh, sees Liam Nelson returning with yet another action film, but this time, he plays a driver with a brother who had fluent aphasia. And they had to team up with others to rescue a group of miners stuck in a mine while discovering sketchy stuff about the company that hired them.

More on the positive side, The Ice Road had a unique premise. Driving a truck carrying heavy stuff through ice should make for a fun and intense thriller. And for the most part, I did find some scenes fun, especially near the first half. The ice and the bobbleheads were used pretty well to create tension.

Moving on to the performances in The Ice Road, Liam Neeson was pretty decent as there wasn’t much action for him to do, and the dialogues were also mediocre. There were other big actors in the movie, although there’s also wasn’t a lot for them to work with. Because of this, I didn’t care much for the characters. They were straightforward and predictable.

And the same applies to the story of the film. Despite the unique setting, the progression was typical of an action thriller. Especially if you’re a fan of action flicks, you will figure out who the bad guys are. The pacing was slow, and I honestly thought the movie already finished 20 minutes before the actual ending. Even though there were stakes in the film, I felt bored because I already knew how it would end.

However, by far, the worst aspect of The Ice Road were the visual effects. The fire, explosions, and snow looked very cheap and were obviously fake. This clearly showed that the movie was meant to be a low-budget throwaway movie. Overall, a mediocre action movie. Watch ‘The Ice Road’ on Netflix here.

‘The Ice Road Rating – 3/5
