11. Good Newwz

Starring – Various
Director – Raj Mehta
Streaming Platform – Amazon Prime

[This excerpt comes from Surya’s ‘Good Newwz’ Review]

Marketed with the tagline “The Biggest Goof-Up of the Year!” Good Newwz starring Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Diljit Dosanjh, and Kiara Advani in the lead roles closes out 2019 on a high note, similar Simmba from last year. It is altogether an enjoyable movie from start to finish. The humor and the emotional sequences work and will indeed entertain the viewer who stops by the cinema to have a good time. But, away from all the sunshine and rainbows, there are quite a few setbacks which should have avoided to make a good movie even better.

10. Mission Mangal

Starring – Various
Director – Jagan Shakti
Streaming Platform – Hotstar

[This excerpt comes from Anushree’s ‘Mission Mangal’ Review]

In 2014, India launched its indigenously made, Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) or Mangalyaan and it created history. With a budget lower than Hollywood blockbusters, this was the first time a nation succeeded in the first attempt. The Mangalyaan mission captured the attention of people across this country because it was the tale of an underdog winning. Mission Mangal based on that triumph is funny, entertaining and backed by some great performances especially by Vidya Balan. Let the team of Mission Mangal lift your spirits with some pop patriotism – it is an enjoyable ride.

9. Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota

Starring – Abhimanyu D, Radhika Madan
Director – Vasan Bala
Streaming Platform – Netflix

[This excerpt comes from Aditi’s ‘30 Best Bollywood Movies on Netflix’ Article]

This one was a crazy ride by Vasan Bala with a rare steadiness of quirky humor and ceaseless energy. I am writing this one with a grin, and the tenth run of the movie on my laptop as Surya’s grandfather is teaching him to say “ouch” and to drink water. Abhimanyu being a debutant has killed it with his skills and Radhika Madan is also mind-blowing. It is a delightfully waggish movie with tons of solid scenes which will leave you in a happy mood. One of the Best Bollywood Movies of 2019 and also one of the craziest ones I’ve seen so far.

8. Bala

Starring – Ayushmann Khurrana, Bhumi Pednekar
Director – Amar Kaushik
Streaming Platform – Hotstar

[This excerpt comes from Surya’s ‘Bala’ Review]

Directed by Amar Kaushik, Bala chronicles the misfortunes of a young balding man and stars Ayushmann Khurrana, Bhumi Pednekar and Yami Gautam in the lead roles. Despite the pacing issues, Bala is packed with some laugh-out-loud moments, entertaining premise and manages to highlight and discuss quite a few significant social issues which are overpowering our society. Coupled with Khurrana and Pednekar’s stellar performances, this movie works and is suitable for a delightful family viewing as there are jokes which will appeal to the kids and also to the adults.

7. Chhichhore

Starring – Sushant Singh Rajput, Shraddha Kapoor
Director – Nitesh Tiwari
Streaming Platform – Hotstar

[This excerpt comes from Surya’s ‘Chhichhore’ Review]

Nitesh Tiwari, who certainly has some decent experience in directing comedies before, exceeded all the expectations and knocked it out-of-the-park once again with Chhichhore. Although it feels like a mixture of many films you’ve seen in the past, it still impresses and entertains you in all aspects. It is a laugh riot filled with emotional moments, stellar performances and a beneficial social message to the younger audience. Despite its flaws, the movie is well worth your time and money and is most certainly one of the Best Bollywood Movies of 2019.

6. Uri: The Surgical Strike

Director – Aditya Dhar
Starring – Vicky Kaushal, Yami Gautam
Streaming Platform – ZEE5

With over 330 crores gross worldwide, Uri: The Surgical Strike was a nationwide phenomenon for all the right reasons. It is an intense thriller coupled with decent emotional drama and bombastic action sequences, which for the most part, were shot and produced well on-screen, and in turn, gave the movie a more realistic and a vivid vibe. But, one of the key factors for the movie’s success is that it is ‘based’ on true events. It showcases the brave steps taken by the Indian Govt. despite colossal pressure and constraint from the opposition parties. Although Uri struggles with multiple issues throughout the narrative it is a well-paced and an entertaining film to watch. – Surya Komal

5. Photograph

Director – Ritesh Batra
Starring – Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Sanya Malhotra
Streaming Platform – Amazon Prime

[This excerpt comes from Surya’s ‘Photograph’ Review]

Written and directed by Ritesh Batra (well known for his 2013 romantic drama, The Lunchbox), Photograph tells a compelling coming-of-age story between two strangers and stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Sanya Malhotra in the lead roles. Even with a 112-minute runtime, which is a tad bit too long, Photograph shines the brightest by focusing on the lead characters and their tender relationship. Ritesh Batra thrives as far as captivating the viewer with his proficient storytelling skills and adept filmmaking skills, whether it’s incorporating lively background noises and encompassing euphonious background score which made the film tantalizing and out of the ordinary. One of the most underrated and Best Bollywood Movies of 2019.

4. Badla

Director – Sujoy Ghosh
Starring – Taapsee, Amitabh Bachchan
Streaming Platform – Netflix

Sujoy Ghosh’s mystery-thriller Badla is a captivating and a no-nonsense film from the beginning till the end. Comprised of top-class performances from Taapsee and Amitabh ji, this film’s narrative was swiftly paced, keeps you guessing for the entire runtime and was capped with twists and turns which were easy to guess, but executed with perfection. Despite a few overt problems, Badla still manages to entertain thoroughly and is undoubtedly one of the Best Bollywood Movies of 2019. – Surya Komal

3. Section 375

Director – Ajal Bahl
Starring – Akshaye Khanna, Richa Chadda
Streaming Platform – Amazon Prime

Ajay Bahl’s Section 375 is one of those rare Bollywood films that keeps you glued to the screen, for its entirety, and leaves you appalled by the end. Showcasing a sexual assault case between a movie director and a junior costume designer, this 124-minute courtroom drama highlights a variety of issues when it comes to today’s world. Be it, the utter negligence shown by the police department, the outrage and the conclusions drawn by people through social media.

Writer Manish Gupta tackled every issue flawlessly and exceptionally structured his narrative by making sense out of every scene. Section 375 is appealing and tries to convey a significant message to today’s generation, and, in my opinion, it did its job immaculately. – Surya Komal

2. Gully Boy

Director – Zoya Akhtar
Starring – Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt
Streaming Platform – Amazon Prime

[This excerpt comes from Surya’s ‘Gully Boy’ Review]

From Luck By Chance to Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Dil Dhadakne Do, Zoya Akhtar always strived to explore different genres and contested with new material, even with her twenty-minute short film featured in the 2018 Netflix Original, Lust Stories. Her 2019 directorial, Gully Boy, is no different. It is raw and entertaining, emotional and inspirational and above all stands tall and adheres to the vibe it created. Although the runtime creates few serious hiccups to the overall product, Zoya Akhtar manages to narrate a beautiful story and at the same time sheds light on the asli hip-hop scene in India which is still underrated despite having some serious talents.

1. Article 15

Director – Anubhav Sinha
Starring – Ayushmann Khurrana
Streaming Platform – Netflix

[This excerpt comes from Anushree’s ‘Article 15’ Review]

Anubhav Sinha’s Article 15 may be one of the most important movies of this year and most certainly one of the Best Bollywood Movies of 2019, and it definitely lives up to those expectations. This movie deals with some very important social issues that plague modern India – the caste system and its impacts. The story is based on several incidents that happened over the past few years, particularly the rape and murder of two young girls in Badayun, UP.

In the film, the cops are unwilling to investigate the case as the victims belong to a lower caste when they are reported missing. When the two girls turn up dead, the police pin the murders on the girl’s families without conducting an investigation.

Article 15 could so easily have been a heavy-handed film as it tries to show the realities of the caste system in India. Instead, it opts for a realism that is refreshing and allows the audience to absorb the story on their own. This is a must-watch movie for everyone because sometimes those of us in the cities lose touch with the real India and this story is a real eye-opener.
