The Batman Review: Exceeds All Expectations!

The Batman Review India: A new Batman is upon us with a new face (Robert Pattinson) and a newly developed presentation of Gotham, written and directed by Matt Reeves. Audiences are often curious when an iconic superhero is brought back into a new franchise, thinking “will it be as good as the last Batman,” or “will it be better?” depending on your previous Batman opinions regarding Affleck, Bale, and Keaton.

This time The Batman features Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Colin Farrell as Penguin, and Paul Dano as The Riddler. With a fantastic cast, my expectations were fairly high. I can say without a doubt after seeing the film, Pattinson is the best Bruce Wayne / Batman duo and this Batman adaptation rivals Christopher Nolan’s trilogy (which was my personal favorite Batman franchise before this).

Matt Reeves’ take on The Batman is dark, disturbing, and bleak. His ability to create a film noir mirroring the mystery of older 1940s noirs with an obvious modern comic book direction is incredible. Reeves makes The Batman feel authentically like a comic book manifested on screen while using his immense talent, resulting in the least “superhero” superhero movie I have seen in the last ten years.

Even if Batman is not your forte, the way Reeves weaves these iconic characters into a noir makes it, so far, the best film of 2022 and will certainly remain a top contender. The mystery in the film has a number of twists and turns and shows Batman’s character development through each “act” of the film. The film’s cinematography and shots maintain the dark black and red color scheme that distinguishes it from any other adaptations. The entire look of the film intensifies the character’s actions and decisions the way a film should.

Zoë Kravitz was made to play Selina Kyle (Catwoman) and the writing of her character was just the right amount of sexy and cunning that expands on her motivations for solving the mystery at hand while displaying her broken past without making her a victim, but instead the hero of her own story. Kravitz and Pattinson’s chemistry is undeniable and it was refreshing to see that sensuality brought back into the Batman films.

The Batman does not cater to its audience as SOME OTHER superhero studios do. With superhero films often taking into account Twitter opinions and making fan fiction adaptations that are meant to please the masses, The Batman clearly had its own direction and ran with it. Having directed the fantastic modern Planet of the Apes franchise, Reeves knows how to get the best “bang for his buck” with the PG-13 rating. He is incredible at maintaining a film’s gritty nature without feeling restricted and surprising the audience with the heaviness of his films.

The Batman exceeds all expectations and deserves to be seen on the biggest screen. If this franchise continues with Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson, I can safely say it has the chance to beat out the Christopher Nolan films for the award of “Best Batman franchise.” Watch ‘The Batman’ in theatres now.

‘The Batman’ Rating – 4.5/5
