Thalaivii Review: Had Nothing Intriguing to Offer!

While looking at any biopic, I always seek for inspiring stories and socially challenging characters. To be honest, a movie star’s life or any politician’s struggle is not what I find fit for it. Late. Jayalalithaa’s life can be viewed in two parts, one is her film career, and the second is her political career. In Thalaivii, the writers have tried their best to trim it and settle down for 150 minutes or less, but have failed miserably to understand the cinematic perspectives of the story.

Her pre-political life displayed in Thalaivii looks so cold, dry, and soulless, and her unconventional affair/love story with MGR never had any ethical meaning. Thalaivii will bore you during the first half, but fortunately, the second half is powerful, as the overall movie is an average watch.

Thalaivii is about actress and politician Jayalalithaa and her career, love life, setbacks, and everything in between a masala script can consist of. The problems with the narrative started when Jayalalithaa’s vibrant and extraordinary life was narrated in a more conventional way by Baahubali writer, K. V. Vijayendra Prasad.

Kangana Ranaut’s performance as the actor Jayalalithaa was, for the most part, underwhelming. However, as a politician, she managed to pull out a remarkable performance. The early days of her career did not offer much variety, so I cannot blame Kangana completely.

Arvind Swami as MGR looks exactly like the legendary actor, notably with that white cap and black shades. His accent sounded a little dull here and there, but on the whole, he is fantastic. Raj Arjun plays R. M. Veerappan in the Hindi version of the film and surprisingly steals the show.

Moreover, Thalaivii, in my opinion, is also prolonged by the songs which were necessary for the commercial purpose but did not leave an impact. The dialogues were fine, sometimes dramatic and mass-oriented.

A. L. Vijay’s attempt to glorify Jayalalithaa’s life on-screen might please her die-hard fans but not the neutral audiences. This movie had nothing intriguing to offer. Watch it strictly for National award-winner Kangana Ranaut and Arvind Swami’s impressive performances.

‘Thalaivii’ Rating – 2.5/5
