Snake Eyes Review: Underwhelming & Unsatisfying!

Directed by Robert Schwentke, Snake Eyes is a 2021 American superhero film, a spin-off from the G.I. Joe franchise, and stars Henry Golding in the titular role with Andrew Koji, Ãšrsula ‘Tokyo’ CorberÃ³, Samara Weaving, and Iko Uwais in supporting roles.

First off, I havenâ€™t watched any G.I. Joe movies (The Rise of Cobra and Retaliation), so I have no idea about Snake Eyes coming in. Because of this, I judge this movie only as an independent action, hoping it to be a great summer blockbuster. And I was thoroughly disappointed.

Before Snake Eyes began, Henry Golding shared that thereâ€™s going to be a lot of action. And thatâ€™s true, as there were many sword fights in the film. However, each action sequence was short and unsatisfying. The camera angles were underwhelming, and I couldnâ€™t see the choreography clearly.

Indonesian movie Superstar Iko Uwais, known for The Raid franchise, was in the movie, and heâ€™s a fantastic martial artist actor if you watched him in any of previous films. However, he was offered very little screen time. Itâ€™s almost like they do not have the budget for long-fight choreography.

The story of the movie was boring and nothing special. Snake Eyes, as a character, was a bland and unlikeable protagonist. And I didnâ€™t care much about his journey, and the ending for his character felt unjustified. Itâ€™s not that Henry Goldingâ€™s acting was inferior, but the direction for his character made him seem like he is playing a supporting role.

The acting in Snake Eyes was okay all across the board. Only Andrew Koji stood out as the Storm Shadow and felt like the actual protagonist of the movie. He was pretty badass with the swords, especially his serious face, and carried the major part of the movie.

Overall, Snake Eyes is a disappointing entry to the G.I. Joe franchise that is primarily spoiled by a mediocre storyline, bland characters, unlikeable protagonist, and horribly shot, executed, and unsatisfying action scenes.
