Peacemaker S1 Review: Solid and Entertaining!

“Do you really wanna! Do ya really wanna taste it!!!” If you watched DC’s newest addition to their extended universe you’ll get that reference. If not, you might want to get on that. Peacemaker stars John Cena in the titular role after the events of The Suicide Squad. Forced to join A.R.G.U.S, he’s given a new mission to save the world with a ragtag team to aid him.

When I first saw this advertised I thought it would either be good or really bad and I’m glad to say that while it may not be my favourite, it’s definitely up there in DC live actions (which isn’t saying much). I feel like DC is finally realising they need to be their own thing in order to compete. They’ve taken a decidedly campy route with James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad and now Peacemaker. I think it’s an aesthetic that really suits the DC we’ve come to know and love. I think if they can put the same level of care into other characters as they’ve done with Peacemaker, they can actually compete in the live action department.

He’s an interesting character. We’re shown his origin story and along with sympathising, we come to see why he is the way he is. Raised in an environment as toxic as he was, it’s actually surprising he’s not worse. This is what makes the relationship between him and Adebayo (played by Danielle Brooks) so genius and genuine. She’s the complete opposite of everything he knows and all that he’s been taught to hate and yet, the two form a strong bond.

I found that the jokes either landed or flopped. There’s no real in between here but I guess this brand of silly humor is not really my thing. I also want to point out that the White Dragon’s costume was awful… I don’t know if this was intentional but it’s just really bad. DC needs to do better with their costumes overall. I think the problem is that they’ve always had a certain aesthetic that’s a little harder to convey in live action. DC is flashy with a multitude of capes and colours whilst Marvel is more understated. Despite minor shortcomings, Peacemaker is a solid and entertaining addition to the DCEU.
