Secret Invasion Review: A Total Waste of Time!

See, if I was a Skrull, I would turn into Kevin Feige. That way, I can shut down all the stupid decisions Marvel Studios has been making with their influx of mediocre entertainment. Secret Invasion is just… pathetic. It takes what could be an interesting story, a story that has already been conceived in the comics, and it somehow turns out to be so damn boring. What I thought would at least be a serviceable sci-fi thriller about shapeshifting super aliens infiltrating the Avengers, and seeing Nick Fury struggle to use his skills to take them down, it was just wishful thinking.

Secret Invasion takes the lazy way at every turn. No stakes or consequences are posed that really rattle the status quo of this universe. The antagonists never felt like a present or unique threat; they felt more like the lame antagonists from Falcon and the Winter Soldier. I can’t say there’s a single satisfying arc for the characters of this show. Of course, it wouldn’t be Marvel proper if the structure of this plot didn’t leave me confused and disgruntled either. Time after time, I would consistently question why certain decisions were made to squander the potential for a compelling story.

Additionally, Secret Invasion just feels like an inadequately handled production. The technical quality is that of an ugly gray coating captured by sloppy hand-held and choppy editing. Above all else, the final episode is where this show shits the bed. All of the worst qualities I have ever seen from bad superhero entertainment is present within this last episode. Shark-jumping nonsense of plot development devolves into a big dumb light show of a final battle with some of the grossest CGI ever. Seriously, the last episode may have very well killed any last shred of hope I have for Marvel.

It’s going to take a miracle (and maybe Season 2 of Loki) for me to generate any more care towards the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Secret Invasion is perhaps the worst Marvel has done for this universe; it’s sloppy, boring, stupid, disappointing, and a total waste of time.
