Over the last four years, Dhanush, a two-time National-award-winning actor, was impressive with his track record of selecting content-driven movies like Vada Chennai, Asuran, and Karnan, however, his selection of commercial titles is quite frankly horrendous. From Maari 2 to Pattas and Jagame Thandhiram, neither of these films didn’t meet the stature or the quality we expect from Dhanush, and Maaran falls into the same category.

The Disney+ Hotstar Multiplex special co-starring Malavika Mohanan and Samuthirakhani in the supporting roles is a 130-minute energy drainer and a snoozefest that I regretted watching every single second. Moving past the storyline, which I’m surprised to find out that it’s written by a 27-year old, the movie had nothing going in its favor. The screenplay hits all the tedious commercial notes from emotion to romance and comedy in the laziest way possible, and the slight twists and turns in the climax fizzled out real quick and didn’t land any impact.

The performances never really stood out from any cast member. Dhanush, in my opinion, chose a horrible movie that had no scope or intent to utilize his terrific acting attributes or his heroic presence. Malavika Mohanan, on the other hand, didn’t make her presence felt and, in my opinion, is poorly cast. The mega-talented Samuthirakani once again plays the run-of-the-mill antagonist, and Smruthi Venkat plays a similar emotional sister role we’ve seen a million times by now.

Overall, Maaran is a very tiring watch. It is not emotional, funny, thrilling, or entertaining at any given stretch. The only positive about the movie is that it is just over two hours long, and I’m glad that I didn’t sit through a more grueling runtime. Let’s all hope that Dhanush fires his manager or agent who made this script reach him, and I don’t even know how or why he decided to spare his time for this debacle. Next time, I also hope the writer-director, Karthick Naren, doesn’t give away the entire plot in the first five minutes.

‘Maaran’ Rating – 1/5
