Love Wedding Repeat Review: Sweet Little Fun!

Written and directed by Dean Craig, Love Wedding Repeat is based on the French film- Plan de Table and stars Sam Claflin, Olivia Munn, Frieda Pinto, Eleanor Tomlinson, and others as the principal cast. Set in Italy, inside a chapel and a wedding hall, for the most part, I would say, this rom-com is about alternative versions of the same day, and discusses what could go wrong if things were to happen differently on a single day. How Jack possibly stops him from doing anything inapt on a beautiful day is told in several versions of the same day.

First off, I went through some initial reviews from other websites, and also the audiences’ opinion before penning mine, to have a general outlook of how people perceived – Love Wedding Repeat. And I was surprised to see people have a negative viewpoint on this film. Calling it cliché, cringe, and whatnot. Maybe, they’re much aware of the previous works of the makers and the actors of the film and might have expected a lot more.

But, as far as I am concerned, I barely knew the actors and never had the chance to check out Dean Craig’s earlier films. I was initially interested to check out this movie only because the trailer looked amusing. With that being said, I would largely disagree with others, and my honest opinion would contradict others.

Let me first talk about the positives, or what made me continue watching Love Wedding Repeat till the very end. The overall narrative of this movie was hilarious and made me genuinely laugh at the chaos going around in the wedding hall. Character-wise, everyone included were offered a well-written back story. Especially, the scenes involving Allan Mustafa and the ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ star Frieda Pinto were enjoyable.

On a more personal note, the entire movie was set inside the premises of a wedding hall, and it made me feel as if I was a guest at the wedding and was part of the wedding activities as all the mess and the disorder got to me. Director Dean Craig must be applauded for this as he sets up the vibe and the ambiance flawlessly.

Love is a very intricate and also a delightful subject if handled well. And the entire narrative of Love Wedding Repeat was filled with elements of love from the beginning till the very end. Director Craig utilized the guests at the wedding to express different emotions and the intricacies people face at giving love and relationship a shot. I can appreciate the way he had handled his characters and gave a proper conclusion to each story.

About the negatives, as I was expressing earlier, quite a few film critics and the audience felt the movie was cringey and clichéd on the whole. But, I was able to see the attractive side the film had to offer and enjoyed it to the fullest. If you’re someone who watched multiple romantic comedies or wedding based movies, you could draw parallels and might even feel vexed as the narrative advances. But, for me, Love Wedding Repeat was refreshing to watch, and I thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful confusion from start to finish. Watch ‘Love Wedding Repeat’ on Netflix here.
