Cold Case Review: A Poor Blend of Crime & Horror!

Tanu Balak’s Cold Case is a mix of crime and paranormal, leading to intriguing parallel investigations. Produced by Anto Joseph, Jomon T John, and Shameer Muhammed, Prithviraj Sukumaran plays the pivotal role, along with Aditi Balan unlocking the clues. With a runtime of 140 minutes, the film unravels the mystery of a criminal investigation that runs through the different perspectives of two individuals.

Cold Case begins with ACP Sathyajith (Prithviraj Sukumaran) when he gets assigned with an investigation that kick starts when a fisherman finds a mutilated skull in a garbage bag. The team supervised by Sathyajith is on the run to find out who was murdered with mere evidence, and the narrative takes interesting turns with significant forensic aspects of the case.

On the other hand, Medha (Aditi Balan) is an investigative journalist, who encounters mysterious happenings around her after she moves to a new place and she begins to find the mysteries behind it. The two investigations go in parallel, which ultimately reveals the same events around the missing person and the truth of a brutal homicide.

Writer Sreenath V. Nath’s narrative style was below par, especially in the first half of Cold Case, which lacked an element of surprise and isn’t all engaging. Also, the parallel storylines were more of bewilderment. In the second half, the script was just above average, and the climax wasn’t that captivating. Overall, with an awful blend of horror and crime drama, the script was a total let-down for the movie.

The cinematography by Gireesh Gangadharan was decent, with beautiful camera shots in and around the city and the countryside. Editing work by Shameer Muhammed was mediocre, and at times it felt that the sound the visuals were not blended well, and the film failed to impress in this aspect. Prakash Alex’s music blended well with the storyline, and the only song was freely flowing with the narrative.

Prithviraj Sukumaran seems effortless in playing the cop, and he portrayed the role with elements of style and appeal. Aditi Balan, who played a major part in the movie and portrayed a well-composed character with mannerisms matching an intelligent investigative journalist. Late Anil Nedumangad had played a decent role of a cop in the special investigation team. Even with less screen time, Athmiya Rajan added to the charm of a mysterious character.

Overall, Cold Case is an indifferent investigative thriller that fails to impress with an inferior concoction of the horror elements. A strict one-time watch! Watch ‘Cold Case’ on Prime Video here.
