6. Vaanam Kottattum

Director – Dhana Sekaran
Genre – Drama
Streaming Platform – Amazon Prime

[This excerpt comes from Sidd’s ‘Vaanam Kottattum’ Review]

When you have a simple, archetypal plot to work with for a film, how do you make it better? Dhana Sekaran’s Vaanam Kottattum (2020) is a guideline on how to elevate an age-old script. The film revolves around a family of four. A father serving time for a crime he committed, a mother who takes over the duties of a breadwinner in his absence and their two children.

Vaanam Kottattum showcases the struggles of a family as they overcome their personal trials and tribulations individually and together as a unit. It’s either a hit or a miss for the audience and that depends on whether the individual has the patience to sit through a slow linear narration that may not have high moments to offer but has its heart in the right place.

5. Dharmadurai

Director – Seenu Ramasamy
Genre – Drama
Streaming Platform – Disney+ Hotstar

[‘Dharmadurai’ is also feat. in our ‘Best Movies of Vijay Sethupathi’ article]

Aishwarya Rajesh plays the role “Kamakapatti” Anbuselvi in the movie Dharmadurai, a typical village girl, goes around helping the village’s elderly and also earns a living by writing articles in a magazine and working in farmland. The energy and the innocence brought in by Aishwarya Rajesh’s impactful performance as Anbuselvi, within 25 minutes, give completeness to the lead character of Dharmadurai. Anbuselvi remains as one of the prominent characters she has ever played, loved, and cherished by all.

4. Namma Veettu Pillai

Director – Pandiraj
Genre – Comedy Drama
Streaming Platform – SUN NXT

In the family entertainer, Namma Veetu Pillai, the character of Tulasi played by Aishwarya Rajesh, as an adopted sister of Arumpom (Sivakarthikeyan) holds the soul of the film as the film is based on the brother-sister relationship. As a young girl, she is downgraded and criticized by Arumpon’s family members. From a lovable younger sister, being only happy with her brother, and as a mature woman after marriage not tolerating the feud between her brother and husband, Aishwarya Rajesh had a large scope to perform, and she delivers it with ease.

3. Kakka Muttai

Director – M. Manikandan
Genre – Comedy Drama
Streaming Platform – Disney+ Hotstar

In the critically acclaimed film Kakka Muttai, Aishwarya Rajesh plays the role of a woman living in the slums, taking care of her two playful children and her mother in law. As the sole breadwinner and with the hope of giving a better life to her children, Aishwarya Rajesh maintains the mood of character with a composed hard face with a little smile to her children now and then. The role being completely in a slum, any leading star would have thought twice as it doesn’t glorify or adds beauty to them, but Aishwarya Rajesh cracked it adding liveliness to the character and her backdrop.

2. Vada Chennai

Director – Vetri Maaran
Genre – Comedy Drama
Streaming Platform – Disney+ Hotstar

[‘Vada Chennai’ is also feat. in our ‘Best Tamil Movies on Hotstar’ article]

In the epic gangster film Vada Chennai directed by Vetri Maaran, Aishwarya Rajesh performs the role of Padma and gets the screen time of what a female lead would get in an action thriller and does justice to it. Even though the character is not the central element in the plot, it has a large impact on the overall narration.

The character of Padma stands as a pillar of support to the protagonist Anbu (Dhanush) as his love interest and also as his better half. Portrayed as a bold, foul-mouthed, and typical girl living in the slums, Aishwarya Rajesh was the best choice for the role, and she gave life to the role through her looks, body language, and the proficiency in the slang.

1. Kanaa

Director – Arunraja Kamaraj
Genre – Sports
Streaming Platform – ZEE5

Kousalya Murugesan is probably one of the best and challenging roles performed by Aishwarya Rajesh in the film Kanaaa women-centric, sports-based film. The role of a brave and an adamant girl, from a rural village and farming background, is in chase of her dream to achieve big in Cricket. The character was a perfect fit for Aishwarya Rajesh’s versatile acting skills, the role of a cricketer, and that too a bowler which requires a ton of physical endurance. Her dedication and involvement through and through, made us travel with the character and also serves as a true motivation.
