12. Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark

Director – André Øvredal
Cast – Zoe Margaret, Michael Garza
Streaming Platform – Prime Video

A group of friends get locked in an old abandoned house by some bullies and invoke something supernatural. Based on the children’s book series of the same name by Alvin Schwartz, there are very few movie adaptions that live up to their books, this is one of them. The setting is very creepy, and the idea of scaring someone with the thing that scares them most is unique and, at the same time, terrifying to watch. With an engaging story that progressed at a steady pace to not bore the viewer, Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark is a winner. One of the Best Horror Movies for Halloween.

11. Unfriended: Dark Web

Director – Stephen Susco
Cast – Colin Woodell, Rebecca Rittenhouse
Streaming Platform – Amazon (Rent)

After a boy steals a laptop from a cafe, things begin to develop and get weird. Although I don’t usually get a sense of films like these, ones that are made with a handheld camera or through computer screens, but this Stephen Susco directorial is decent inside and out. It began nice and slow, but once it picked up the pace, the narrative took an unpredictable and more of an eerie route. It was terrifying, especially towards the very end.

10. Eli

Director – Ciarán Foy
Cast – Kelly Reilly, Sadie Sink
Streaming Platform – Netflix

A young child is moved to an isolated clinic to get a cure from a rare skin disease. Presented with the right amount of scary scenes, the narrative alongside the climax is outstanding and very unique. Eli is a special kind of movie that creeps you out to the extent that if your feet are dangling off the bed, you pull them closer because you’re afraid something is going to grab you from under the bed. A must-watch and one of the Best Horror Movies for Halloween.

9. The Baztan Trilogy

Director – Fernando Gonzalez Molina
Cast – Marta Etura, Carlos Libardo
Streaming Platform – Netflix

A detective looking into the murder of a young woman finds herself entangled with an evil force. First off, these movies are long, and the subject matter is very taxing, so it would take you about three days to watch these movies and absorb them. However, trust me when I say that the films are worth your time and energy, they will keep you invested in the storyline even until the very end. And each movie builds up such intense suspense, and all of them have such satisfying endings that it makes the viewing experience worthy.

8. Wicked Little Things

Director – J. S. Cardone
Cast – Lori Heuring, Chloë Grace Moretz

A newly divorced mother moves into an isolated family home in the hills with her two daughters, but the town holds a secret that could prove to be fatal. Directed by J. S. Cardone, I first watched this movie when I was in the sixth grade, and I couldn’t go out of the house after it got dark for a whole month. I rewatched it recently and felt just as creeped out. It was gory and chilling and is a must-watch.

7. A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night

Director – Ana Lily Amirpour
Cast – Ana Lily Amirpour, Sheila Vand
Streaming Platform – Prime Video

In a small town, abusive men start to disappear, and no one can determine how. Directed by Ana Lily Amirpour, this horror-western is powerful in its approach and explores an engaging storyline. The black and white color tone of the film was beautiful to watch, and the overall effect of the film will reign you in. Although, I have to say that I believe the movie isn’t for everyone, but you should check it out, especially if you like films centered around strong female leads. One of the Best Horror Movies for Halloween.

6. The Mothman Prophecies

Director – Mark Pellington
Cast – Richard Gere, Laura Linney
Streaming Platform – Netflix

Preview Only: After the sudden death of his wife, a journalist tries to make sense of her visions before her death. Based on the Mothman myths, which state that the sighting of an elusive figure is a sign of a huge disaster, this 2002 film is an intriguing watch. It begins slow but, at the same time, it was creepy and engrossing, that you won’t mind how long it is.

5. The Uninvited

Director – Charles Guard & Thomas Guard
Cast – Emily Browning, Arielle Kebbel
Streaming – Amazon (Rent)

Next on this eerie list of the Best Horror Movies for Halloween, after the death of their mother, the two sisters vow to avenge her death. This is such a great horror movie! Directed by Charles Guard and Thomas Guard, The Uninvited has all the fixings of a good horror film. It is scary, creepy, and maintains an aura of mystery alongside the incredible plot twist. A perfect movie to sit back and enjoy watching with your friends.

4. The Blackcoat’s Daughter

Director – Oz Perkins
Cast – Emma Roberts, Kiernan Shipka
Streaming Platform – Netflix

Over the winter holidays, two girls are left alone in a boarding school. Directed by Oz Perkins, The Blackcoat’s Daughter starts a bit slow, but, it’s not mundane, you don’t get bored, and it’s a great aid used by the director to create suspense and set the mood. The narrative has three timelines, two of which intersect with each other, and the third takes place nine years after the latter two. Overall, this film is a decent watch, and despite the slow pace, you cannot look away from it.

3. Midsommar

Director – Ari Aster
Cast – Florence Pugh, Jack Reynor
Streaming Platform – Prime Video

A group of friends travels to Germany to attend the midsummer festival. Well, first off, the movie has some explicit content, and there’s a decent amount of blood and gore in there too so, that might not be for everyone. Other than that, the movie was creepy, thrilling and the group of friends are tripping throughout the film which adds another layer of creepiness to everything. Again, this movie is not for everyone, but if you can, do check it out.

2. Us

Director – Jordan Peele
Cast – Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke
Streaming Platform – Amazon (Rent)

A family goes to the beach for the summer holidays and gets robbed by some peculiar looking people. One of the best horror movies of the last decade, Us (2019), is creepy and unpredictable. The storyline was super unique, compelling, and me on the edge of my seat inside and out. There wasn’t a dull moment, kudos to the director Jordan Peele for delivering yet another impressive film.

1. Under the Shadow

Director – Babak Anvari
Cast – Narges Rashidi, Bobby Naderi
Streaming Platform – Netflix

To top off the list of Best Horror Movies for Halloween, during the Iran-Iraq war, a mother tries to keep her daughter safe while her father works overseas. Directed by Babak Anvari, Under the Shadow, a Persian horror film is based on a true story and qualifies as a splendid watch supported by an unusual backdrop and magnificent performances.
