Years into his acting career, Ayushmann Khurrana, from Vicky Donor to his latest release Bala, his movies tries to deliver a significant social message in the most entertaining way possible. Additionally, his alternate attempts at movies like Article 15 and Andhadhun have also worked in his favor and went on to become the landmark movies in his filmography. So, as Ayushmann Khurrana is in the process of altering the course of Indian commercial cinema, I’ve decided to rank all his movies from Worst to Best starting from Vicky Donor.

20. Hawaizaada (2015)

More often than not, what do you usually envision from a biopic? Inspiration? Courage? or Creativity? A life story discloses numerous things that we’re not aware of a noble personality and motivates us in several ways, but, in the case of Hawaizaada, which spotlights the story of Shivkar Bapuji Talpade who constructed the first aircraft, things are different. Hawaizaada is a type of movie that you want to love and share with your friends but ultimately, you’ll end up with anger and hatred.

19. Nautanki Saala! (2013)

Director – Rohan Sippy

One of the more average movies from Ayushmann Khurrana, Rohan Sippy’s Nautanki Saala! created a ton of buzz around the B-town with its chartbuster songs before the release. However, the movie didn’t live up to the hype for a few reasons. Even though the story is on the decent side of things, the comedy didn’t blend well with the narrative making it a very ordinary watch.

18. Bewakoofiyaan (2014)

Nupur Asthana’s Bewakoofiyaan is not a storyteller, it holds with a stale storyline and tries to spread out into few confusing ways which are forgettable after fifteen minutes. It tries to deliver the amusement which may sporadically appeal to you. Not a definite watch, but if you’re enthusiastic, go for it.

17. Anek (2022)

Anubhav Sinha’s action-thriller centers amid the turmoil in north-east India, and an undercover agent, Aman (Ayushmann Khurrana) tasked with peace negotiations comes across a passionate boxer fighting for her dreams. A total mess of a movie, Anek transacts with a pretty dense and intriguing story, but the screenplay was a total disaster, and doesn’t make the film appealing to watch.

16. Meri Pyaari Bindu (2017)

Akshay Roy’s Meri Pyaari Bindu’s main selling point is its characters. Both the leads played by Khurrana and Parineeti portray their characters with ease and the story, although roughly paced, has its moments from start to finish. The music and the songs also support the narrative well and make this movie a pleasant one-time watch.

However, on the whole, the diverse characters and the stellar performances from the cast, especially from Amitabh Bachchan, alongside a few technical aspects were the only gleaming positives.

Dream Girl 2, a collaboration between Balaji Productions and filmmaker Raaj Shaandilyaa, continues the comic journey with Ayushmann Khurrana and Ananya Panday in the lead. While it maintains the thematic depth of loneliness from its predecessor, Panday’s performance feels lacking compared to the original actress. The film adeptly balances social commentary with comedy, though pacing issues and plot holes hinder its effectiveness. Nonetheless, it offers a bittersweet cinematic experience worth exploring.

Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan is one of Bollywood’s very first movies (‘Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga’ being the other one) that positively display the LGBTQ community more respectably. The two-hour romantic comedy explores the journey of an openly gay couple, Kartik and Aman trying to convince the latter’s strictly conservative family about their relationship amidst some massive family drama and sensitive characters.

The movie is a crowd-pleaser despite having some screenwriting and pacing issues. The comedy is on-point for the most part, and the characters were offered with quite a few moments to shine bright and entertain. Additionally, the core storyline of the film was executed properly as the filmmaker took it seriously and illustrated it with respect. This film is a win-win for both the LGBTQ community and Indian Cinema, which is only getting better with time.

Directed by Amar Kaushik, Bala chronicles the misfortunes of a young balding man (Ayushmann Khurrana). Despite the pacing issues, Bala is packed with some laugh-out-loud moments, entertaining premise and manages to highlight and discuss quite a few significant social issues which are overpowering our society. Coupled with Khurrana and Pednekar’s stellar performances, this movie works and is suitable for a delightful family viewing as there are jokes which will appeal to the kids and also to the adults.

Dream Girl – yet another comedy-drama from Ayushmann Khurrana is entertaining through and through similar to his previous blockbuster hits, Badhaai Ho and Shubh Mangal Saavdhan. Raaj Shaandilyaa – a well-tenured dialogue writer, did a splendid job directing the film as the comedy and the family drama flows well inside and out. Additionally, Nushrat Bharucha, as the female lead is also a bonus to this exceptionally funny movie.

7. Shubh Mangal Saavdhan (2017)

Directed by R.S. Prasanna, Shubh Mangal Saavdhan is about a soon-to-be-married couple Mudit and Sugandha and their attempt to overcome many disputes especially Mudit’s sex-related issue. Now, the comedic elements in this film were amazing, the jokes were on-point and the film was a laugh riot throughout its runtime. The performances were great, the chemistry between Ayushmann and Bhumi Pednekar worked really well and they’re both entertaining to watch. Overall, Shubh Mangal Saavdhan is a feel-good film with a lot of laughs that will keep you entertained and is also worth a shot!

6. Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui

Preview Only: Directed by Abhishek Kapoor, who previously helmed impressive films like Rock On!!, Kai Po Che! and Kedarnath, his 2021 directorial revolves around Manu, a bodybuilder from Chandigarh, who falls in love with Maanvi, a Zumba teacher. All seems well until a revelation causes turmoil in their love story. One of the gutsiest Ayushmann Khurrana films to date.

5. Bareilly Ki Barfi (2017)

Directed by Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari, Bareilly Ki Barfi, apart from an entertaining story has the comedic sequences on point, the relationship between the characters were well-developed and the overall performances were fun to watch. But, the highlight of the film has to be Rajkummar Rao and his performance as an innocent and dapper looking dude who kept stealing the show every time he’s on-screen especially during the second half. Overall, Bareilly Ki Barfi often had few hiccups but it’s delightful enough for you to give it a shot!

4. Badhaai Ho (2018)

Set in New Delhi, Ayushmann Khurrana plays the role of a conventional software employee, Nakul, who has a normal girlfriend in Sanya Malhotra. But, the storyline kicks in when Khurrana’s 50-year old mother gets impregnated by his father accidentally. Embracing the weirdness of the plot, the entire narrative was sprinkled cleverly with witty jokes. Moreover, the funny dialogue, poignant emotion, delightful love stories, the weepy family-drama and terrific performances from the entire cast elevate the film’s quality and makes it a refreshing watch.

Ayushmann Khurrana’s debut film, Vicky Donor, directed by Shoojit Sircar is, in fact, one of his best movies to date and probably one of the funniest out of the bunch. The premise of the film explores the life of Vicky Arora, a sperm donor who’s life is in disarray once his family and girlfriend learn about his profession. Provided with multiple hilarious scenes, the film also has some heart and portrays deep-emotions with remarkable character moments. An enjoyable watch!

2. Article 15 (2019)

Anubhav Sinha’s Article 15 may be one of the most significant movies of this year, and it lives up to those expectations. It deals with some very severe social issues that plague modern India, the caste system and its impacts. The story is based on several incidents that happened over the past few years, particularly the rape and murder of two young girls in Badayun, UP. In the film, the cops are unwilling to investigate the case as the victims belong to a lower caste when they are reported missing. When the two girls turn up dead, the police pin the murders on the girl’s families without conducting an investigation.

Article 15 could so easily have been a heavy-handed film as it tries to show the realities of the caste system in India. Instead, it opts for realism that is refreshing and allows the audience to absorb the story on their own. Ayushmann Khurrana plays Ayan Ranjan, the region’s Addl. CP and his character are more grounded and the one who tries to make sense out a ridiculous situation. This movie is a must-watch for everyone because sometimes those of us in the cities lose touch with the real India and this story is a real eye-opener.

The primary plot revolves around the main character, Akash (Ayushmann Khurrana), and his everyday adventures trying to trick everyone that he’s blind. Filled with countless twists and turns, Andhadhun is a well-acted, meticulously crafted film. It is an incredibly written satirical crime-thriller which keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire time from the beginning till the end.
