Top 5 Reasons Why Student of the Year 2 Will Fail Critically and Commercially
[This article does not intend to hurt anyone’s feelings. Take it with a grain of salt and I wish nothing but success to the entire film crew who worked tirelessly every day to deliver the movie they wanted on time.]

Karan Johar’s upcoming college drama, Student of the Year 2, is the talk of the town for quite some time now with the promo songs and trailers of the film trending on YouTube for multiple reasons. From the viral online memes to valid criticisms from several movie pundits, SOTY 2 might have to face the same fate akin to Dharma Productions’ previous film Kalank, which is undoubtedly one of the worst films of the year. Accordingly, here are a few primary reasons why this film will fail critically and commercially.
5. Tiger Shroff: The Typical Bollywood Macho Man
Now, Tiger Shroff has a decent track record. From Heropanti to Baaghi and Baaghi 2, his movies have an audience, and the box office numbers are consistent all through. Coming to SOTY 2, which deals with a different demographic, it is tough to argue that his presence will pull in the crowds to the movie theater except for the opening weekend. His disability to act decently and pull through a movie which is not based primarily on action and dance sequences are zero to none, so, it should be interesting to watch him carry this controversial film to the finish line.
4. The Generic Music
Welcome to the era of popular Bollywood movies where at least one song in the movie is a remake/remix/rehash of a euphonious old classic. It is a moronic trend which somehow finds a way to sustain over the years and with music labels like T-Series desperately trying to produce a viral hit (which is only viral for a month), these songs are like little cockroaches which keep finding their way into the trending playlists. The music of SOTY 2 is nothing different, it is the same generic junk with annoying electronic beats and auto-tuned vocals. Even the titles of the ‘so-called’ chartbusters (The Hookup Song, The Jawaani Song) sound utterly stupid, and uncreative.

3. Tried and Tested
It is tough to even play a ‘Spot the Difference’ game between Student of the Year and its doppelganger. The sequel duplicates almost everything from the same picturesque college campus, attractive woman, men who love to pick fights to “competitive” Indian Hunger Games and a tedious love-triangle. And I can already picture how the movie will start, develop, follow the same footsteps and eventually end up in the same trash can as the original.
2. The People Have Spoken
The audience has already communicated their displeasure with a considerable amount of dislikes on the YouTube promos as I didn’t come across a single person who’s excited to watch this film on a positive note. However, there are quite a few lunatics like myself who want to watch the trainwreck on-screen and many others who are just admirers of a particular actor in the film. But, I very well believe, despite the negative hype, this film will enjoy a 50+ crore gross in the opening weekend which is strong and customary for a Tiger Shroff movie.

1. The Stupid Bollywood Formula
If we can revisit the month of April, Kalank, which is again prototypical Bollywood movie from Dharma Productions encountered a disastrous fate. The audience made it loud and clear that orthodox Bollywood movies with flashy dance numbers, peppy songs, high production values and ridiculous comedic sequences are not working anymore. If we take stock of last year’s successful movies like Andhadhun, Badhaai Ho, Mulk and Stree, the quality was given more importance than stupidity and people applauded those films by watching them in the theatre. But, in spite of that, SOTY 2 at least from the trailers is trying to rehash the same old Bollywood formula and will no doubt fail miserably.
