Vantha Rajavathaan Varuven – Honest Movie Review

I just made a mistake watching this atrocious film after having an enthralling experience with Sarvam Thaala Mayam. It just ruined my mood and left me with a headache.

Verdict – “Nee Varamalaiye Irundhu Irukalam…”

I initially thought VRV would be a commercial entertainer considering the fact that Sundar. C films don’t compromise on the entertaining factor and glamour. But, Vandha Rajavathaan Varuvan, a remake of award-winning Telugu film ‘Attarintiki Daredi’ is nothing but a complete mess which would compete with 2017 film ‘Anbanavan Adangadhavan Asaradhavan’ (another flying sh*tbox starring STR).

Adithya (STR), the grandson of Raghunandhan (Nassar), a business-tycoon in Spain, returns to India in search of his paternal aunt Nandhini Prakash (Ramya Krishnan). A family conflict, when Nandhini married Prakash (Prabhu), a small-time lawyer then, without the consent of her father, leads to his fury as he sends them out of his house. Years later, Raghunandhan realises his mistake and wants to reunite with his daughter. Adithya promises his grandfather to bring her back for his 80th birthday and leaves to India.

Wow! Exciting right? Well searched and researched, innovative and original. In an era, where content-rich movies like ‘Ratsasan’ and ‘Pariyerum Perumal’ are highly appreciated by the audience, Sundar C had delivered such a senseless film. I’m not against commercial movies; they do provide entertainment to the movie-going public expecting a quick escapade from their mundane life. But, that doesn’t mean a well-established director can offer a moronic movie. Another downside of the film was its background score. Hip Hop Tamizha’s BGM was too loud and irritating most of the time.

STR looks dapper, ultra-modern with his chubby cheeks, belly and man boobs. In the upcoming years, with this physique, he could probably make a biopic of his father T. Rajendar without any makeup. Catherine Tresa and Megha Akash serve their purpose of being the glam girls.

The only significant, positive aspect of this film was Yogi Babu. He came as a life saviour and provided a comforting 15 minutes comedy relief. Without further whining, this movie will most likely feature in the Top 5 Worst Movies of 2019 list as it is worthy to call this film, ‘Horrendous!’

My Rating – 1/5 | Grade – D

  • Dear Mr. Raj,

I have read your review and what i feel is the wrath on this film unless a review. Though it doesn't worth of a review shouldn't you feel not to take a biased step with the actor and story. Even i too hate this film because a good family drama story has been wasted.
However, what i felt while reading your review is sheer wrath on these kind of family melodramas. Obviously this film was a huge hit with Pawankalyan in Telugu and Sudeep remade it in Kannada. Dialogues of Trivikram was awesome as usual. Pawan's charisma worked hugely in favor of AD.
What went wrong with VRV is conveying of emotions was too artificial and not touching. If Sundar & Simbu worked hard to convey the emotional conflict of Adithya then this could have been a good film. They failed to capture the emotions. That's why the old concept looked like boring concept.
My small request to you is though Ratsasan and PP style of films are good but it was not reached to huge number of audience due to caste based story and psycho thriller genre. We, as audience want to feel good and high on entertainment after watching a film. Eg: Inception, Interstellar, TDKR. These films have conveyed the emotion. Chris Nolan once quoted, "Why you worry that Dom is still in dream or not? He's happy that he has joined with his family".
Likewise, emotion is the important factor of a film. In psycho thriller, you will get confused and afraid. Nobody wants to get afraid again and nobody will get afraid too. So, please analyse the nature of story and write a review. No story is good or bad unless its been conveyed properly.
Even though, Pulp Fiction has garnered film nerds into its way, still Forrest Gump won the best film and best adapted screenplay even music too. Family drama, action drama are bigger than any other films genre you have mentioned.
I'm not saying that VRV is a good film. Its a good story acted and conceived in a bad manner. Kindly change your views on family drama genre.
In addition, VRV sold more tickets than PP & Ratsasan in TN alone. Well, that's the power of family drama. Even Fast & Furious became A level franchise from B grade films when it does included itself as a family film.
