Uncharted Review: An Entertaining Popcorn Flick!

Uncharted is directed by Ruben Fleischer and is based upon the video game series of the same name. Tom Holland stars as everyone’s favorite PlayStation character in Nathan Drake, and Mark Wahlberg stars as his mentor Victor Sullivan or Sully for short. This is a sort of origin story for Nathan Drake and Victor Sullivan as they chase a long lost treasure that the great explorer Ferdinand Magellan found a long time ago. The treasure was lost, but anything that’s lost can be found.

Uncharted is one of my favorite video games of all time. I have played all four games and love each of them for their own individual reasons. I enjoyed each game so much and I treasure them as a part of childhood. So it’s safe to say this series has a soft spot in my heart. As far as the movie goes… the question is… is it as good as the games the simple answer is no. This movie is no masterpiece but it is absolutely and unequivocally entertaining.

I enjoyed myself very much so with Uncharted. It is great action, awesome set pieces, funny one liners and much more. This movie gets going right away and just keeps moving. The direction here is done very well. The script is also done very well. While it isn’t perfect, as some things feel rushed and the dialogue can be iffy at times, it mostly does a good and efficient job.

Now onto the performances. Tom Holland is really good as Nathan Drake. He genuinely surprised me delivering an excellent take of the iconic naughty dog character. Mark Wahlberg is also really good and very funny. The dynamic between Nathan and Sully is heart-warming and hysterical. Sophia Ali is pretty good and everyone else is alright.

My most glaring issues with Uncharted were the weak villain and the lack of focus on the true villain. I just never really thought this villain provided anything interesting, unique, original or powerful. It was just lackluster. Uncharted was a fun time at the movies. I definitely recommend y’all check it out this weekend. I am almost certain fans and newcomers alike will enjoy this film for what it is, an entertaining popcorn flick.

‘Uncharted’ Rating – 3/5
