Release Date – May 10
Director – Rob Letterman
Starring – Ryan Reynolds, Justice Smith
Detective Pikachu will be the first live-action film in the coveted Pokémon franchise. Starring Ryan Reynolds as Pikachu, the movie created plenty of buzz already with many appreciating the film’s premise, tone and the silly humour. Detective Pikachu will open two weeks after Avengers: Endgame and will look forward to scoring a decent box-office success solely because of the future of the live-action franchise.
Release Date – May 17
Director – Chad Stahelski
Starring – Keanu Reeves, Halle Berry
Similar to the Taken franchise, John Wick is well-known property among the action movie fans largely because of the charismatic lead star, Keanu Reeves and the breathtaking action scenes. So far, the promos of Chapter 3 promise the same amount of intrigue and entertainment with a higher and a grander production scale. Hoping that this is the series finale, Parabellum is without a doubt one of the most anticipated movies of this Summer.
Release Date – May 24
Director – Guy Ritchie
Starring – Will Smith, Mena Massoud, Naomi Scott
A live action version of the hugely popular 1992 animated movie, Aladdin is one of Disney’s more risky projects this year especially since the widespread disapproval that the trailer received. There will be inevitable comparisons between Will Smith as Genie and the Late Robin Williams, who voiced Genie in the original and whose genius made that movie so memorable for kids and adults alike. With Guy Ritchie at the helm and all the controversy surrounding the whitewashing of a middle eastern story, Aladdin is in the news for all the wrong reasons but how will it fare at the box office?
Release Date – May 31
Director – Michael Dougherty
Starring – Vera Farmiga, Millie Bobby Brown
Here comes The Big Dog, King of the Monsters will be the 35th film in the Godzilla film franchise, and the sequel to the 2014 summer hit Godzilla and stars a brand new cast featuring Kyle Chandler and Vera Farmiga. The early trailers suggest a more action-packed narrative when compared to the previous film. However, the most entertaining element of this movie should be the return of Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah who will ultimately battle Godzilla. King of the Monsters is one movie you do not want to miss watching in the theaters.
Release Date – May 31
Director – Dexter Fletcher
Starring – Taron Egerton
With the astounding success of Bohemian Rhapsody, the 2018 Queen biopic, Rocketman, based on the life of Elton John has a lot riding on its shoulders. Although the promotional material looks utterly fascinating, this movie will either hit or fall flat when it comes to the audience response, and I hope Taron Egerton receives applause for his portrayal of the titular character just like last year Oscar-winner Rami Malek.
Release Date – June 7
Director – Simon Kinberg
Starring – Various
The final trailer for Dark Phoenix dropped yesterday, and generated newfound excitement among fans, but not enough, as the future is dark for X-Men under Fox with the Disney merger now complete and Endgame taking all the limelight marketing-wise. The franchise hit a low-point with the disappointing Apocalypse, a massive letdown after finding a new soul with the path-breaking Days of Future Past. The first genuine superhero franchise launched way before comic book movies became a part of our cultural tapestry, it’s not too much to ask for a proper send off to these beloved characters who have been around for two decades, a world that gave us Wolverine. Marvel’s absolute domination is imminent, but it will be gratifying to watch Fox deliver to the fans, one last time.
Release Date – June 14
Director – F. Gary Gray
Starring – Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson
Reuniting the Thor: Ragnarok couple, Hemsworth and Thompson, MIB: International will, of course, be a brand new spin on the franchise when compared to the previous films. With the dynamic chemistry between the two lead stars, this film carries the same amount of stupefied humor and the crazy ridiculous fun for which the franchise is known for. F. Gary Gray as the director only adds more appeal to the film, and hopefully, it will not disappoint.
Release Date – June 21
Director – Josh Cooley
Starring – Tom Hanks, Tim Allen
Toy Story is one of the most successful franchises from Pixar Animation, and this sequel is highly awaited. There are a few new additions to our favourite group of toys like Forky, Ducky, and Bunny, with all the old favourites like Woody, Buzz, Jessie, Bo Peep, Rex, Slinky. Perhaps most importantly, Mr and Mrs Potato Head will return too with Mr Potato Head being voiced again by the Late great Don Rickles, although it’s unclear how Don Rickles’s voice will be recreated. The franchise has always hit the right notes with its emotional and poignant look at the role toys play in a child’s life, Can Toy story 4 follow in the footsteps of its predecessors?
Release Date – June 28
Director – Gary Dauberman
Starring – Mckenna Grace, Madison Iseman
Serving as the sequel for the 2014 and 2017 box-office hits Annabelle and Annabelle: Creation, the premise of Annabelle Comes Home (included in our Top 11 Horror Movies You Can’t Miss in 2019 list) is appealing. Here’s the pitch:
“Ed and Lorraine Warren bring the possessed doll to the locked artefacts room in their home, placing her “safety†behind sacred glass and enlisting a priest’s holy blessing. But an unholy night of horror awaits as Annabelle awakens the evil spirits in the room, who all set their sights on a new target.†[Source and Writing Credits: Wikipedia]
Obviously, we are getting that Night at the Museum vibe added to the movie. Also, Gary Dauberman seems to be a worthy fit as the director considering his past experience working as a writer for the Annabelle and IT franchises.
Release Date – July 5
Director – Jon Watts
Starring – Tom Holland
An above-average Homecoming acted charismatically by spoil-mouth Tom Holland has enabled director Jon Watts to up the scale in Far From Home, the first Phase Four Marvel movie, coming after the expectedly devastating aftermath of Endgame. Spidey will go international, leaving his friendly neighborhood behind, to fight the Elementals while on a school trip to Europe. It will also feature Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) as a mysterious (sorry) ally, or someone who will appear as such. It has a huge job of setting the base for future Marvel movies as it seemingly hints to an Illuminati presence behind-the-scenes, while also maintaining the balance of staying true to the heart of the character and putting him in circumstances he’s never experienced before.
Release Date – July 19
Director – Jon Favreau
Starring – Various
Another Live action version of a very popular animated movie, Jon Favreau’s The Lion King will be released on the 25th anniversary of the original and is one of the most highly anticipated movies of this year. Although its not technically Live action because very much like Disney’s other attempt at Live action/CGI (The Jungle Book), Lion King is almost completely made of CGI. Can Favreau repeat the success of The Jungle Book with The Lion King?
Release Date – July 26
Director – Quentin Tarantino
Starring – Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie
Featuring a stellar star cast, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is easily one of the most awaited films for several years now. Tarantino will return to the director’s chair after the not-so-successful 2015 film, The Hateful Eight and with him reuniting with DiCaprio and Pitt for the first time since 2009 and 2012, this film easily captured the general audience reaction when the first trailer dropped last month. This will be DiCaprio’s first film after his Oscar-winning bout, The Revenant and it should be interesting to watch him play the character of a television actor who is on the decline.
Release Date – August 2
Director – David Leitch
Starring – Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham
Marketed as the first spin-off movie in the Fast and the Furious franchise, Hobbs and Shaw star two of the biggest international names in the industry accompanied by Idris Elba in the antagonist role. Introducing the superhero element to the franchise, this movie promises more fun and delight to the viewer and with David Leitch (John Wick and Deadpool 2 fame) serving as the director, we can only expect utmost ridiculousness.
