23. Things Heard & Seen

Directors – Shari Springer Berman, Robert Pulcini
Cast – James Norton & Amanda Seyfried

A young married couple moves from a small town into a strange home Amanda Seyfried is one of my favorite actresses, she has so much range and does such diverse movies. As far as the movie goes, it was a decent watch. The atmosphere throughout the film was super mysterious and ominous, and as the story progressed, the setting got even creepier. The storyline is interesting, there are overlapping stories, and towards the end, things escalate so quickly that it kept me on the edge-of-my-seat. – Zoha Junaid

22. Escape Room

Director – Adam Robitel
Cast – Taylor Russell, Deborah Ann Woll

Inspired by Saw and multiple other survival and problem-solving films, Adam Robitel’s Escape Room follows the course of six random strangers who find their way in an escape room, in return for a ten grand cash prize. Although the movie comes nowhere near the entertaining movies in this genre, it is not entirely disappointing either as it is entertaining at times. – Surya Komal

21. Fear Street Trilogy

Director – Leigh Janiak
Cast – Kiana Madeira, Sadie Sink

Probably one of the better Netflix Originals in a long time, Fear Street, based on R. L. Stine’s book series of the same name, is not certainly scary but it is entertaining, gory, and a captivating slasher trilogy. Supported by a decent storyline, charismatic actors, and good performances in all three films, Fear Street is recommended if you’re up for a good thriller. – Surya Komal

20. Brightburn

Director – David Yarovesky
Cast – Elizabeth Banks and David Denman

Brightburn stars Elizabeth Banks and David Denman in the lead roles and narrates an alternate storyline of a kid gifted with superpowers. On the whole, Brightburn worked well as an uncomical origin story in all actuality, this movie is a fresh new take on the origin story we have seen many times before. It is short, slick, and gory to the fullest extent comprised of some fine performances from the lead cast. A decent and one of the Best Horror Movies on Netflix India– Surya Komal

19. The Pope’s Exorcist

Director – Julius Avery
Cast – Russell Crowe, Daniel Zovatto

Russell Crowe shines as Father Gabriele Amorth in The Pope’s Exorcist a gripping portrayal of exorcism based on a true story. Crowe’s performance balances humor and intensity, offering a fresh take on the genre. The film’s unique approach to demonic possession, devoid of clichés, delivers genuine chills. It’s a must-see for horror fans, blending clever character dynamics with a powerful message of forgiveness, all within a gritty, minimalistic narrative. – Zoha Junaid

18. Creep (2014)

Director – Patrick Kack-Brice
Cast – Mark Duplass

Adapting the found-footage mockumentary-style filmmaking, Creep (2014) is disturbing to watch through and through. With a straightforward premise, setting, and only two actors as the primary cast, the movie plays on our basic fears and structures it’s narrative fantastically. A remarkably scary and especially uncomfortable to watch, Creep is one of the Best Horror Movies on Netflix India. – Surya Komal

17. Under the Shadow

Director – Babak Anvari
Cast – Narges Rashidi, Avin Manshadi

During the Iran-Iraq war, a mother tries to keep her daughter safe while her father works overseas. Directed by Babak Anvari, Under the Shadow, a Persian horror film is based on a true story and qualifies as a splendid watch supported by an unusual backdrop and magnificent performances.

16. Don’t Breathe

Director – Fede Alvarez
Cast – Stephen Lang, Jane Levy

Directed by Fede Alvarez, Don’t Breathe is, without a doubt, one of the best directed and presented horror films of the last decade. With characters that are partially developed and a central theme based around claustrophobia, Don’t Breathe takes chances and captivates you as a viewer from the beginning till the end. It is a movie that I would recommend more for the direction rather than the story and the characters. – Surya Komal

15. World War Z

Director – Marc Forster
Cast – Brad Pitt & Dede Gardner

One of the finest and the most entertaining films of Brad Pitt, World War Z is a horror/action-drama that exists in a world hit by a very serious plague where humans turn into zombies. With well-shot action scenes, some decent drama and performances from the cast, and a climax which concluded the film on a high note, World War Z is a worthy watch on any given weekend.

14. The Black Phone

Director – Scott Derrickson
Cast – Ethan Hawke, Mason Thames

Scott Derrickson’s The Black Phone masterfully blends serial killer horror with ghostly elements, anchored by a compelling 1970s backdrop. Ethan Hawke’s unsettling portrayal complements outstanding performances by young talents Mason Thames and Madeleine McGraw. This profound tale of fear, love, and trauma delivers chilling scares and resonant human experiences, making it a must-see.

13. The Maid (2020)

Director – Lee Thongkham
Cast – Ploy Sornarin, Savika Chaiyadej

Best Horror Movies on Netflix India: The Maid (2020) delivers an intense psychological thriller experience. The film masterfully explores the complexities of class dynamics and the harrowing consequences of obsession. Lead actress Ploy Sornarin’s captivating performance immerses viewers in the unraveling mind of the titular maid. 12. Nang Nak

Director – Nonzee Nimibutr
Cast – Intira Jaroenpura, Winai Kraibutr

Nang Nak is the first horror film I ever had the pleasure of watching. Based on a Thailand legend, the film is set in the late 1860s and revolves around a young husband who returns from war, unaware of what happened to his family in his absence. A romantic tragedy horror film, Nang Nak has a touching love story that is emotional and bone-chilling at the same time. The phrase, a love that transcends death is the foundation of this emotional feature and you’ll find yourself thinking about existential questions about love, life and death long after the film has ended.

The scares were well-thought out and the director does well to build the tension from the start at a steady pace, reminding the audience that there just might be something around the corner. Nang Nak has its dry spots and they act as speed breakers to an otherwise solid film. However, being an Asian film, there are bouts of sentimentality littered all over that the western audience might be unused to and confused about.

There is minimal acting in this picture, but I personally thought it contributed to the setting of the film and the lives of ordinary people in rural Thailand. Nang Nak comes highly recommended and you might just shed a tear once you’re done with this unique horror film. One of the Best Horror Movies on Netflix India. – Siddharthen

11. The Perfection

Director – Richard Shepard
Cast – Allison Williams, Logan Browning

[This excerpt comes from Surya’s ‘The Perfection’ Review]

Best Horror Movies on Netflix India:The Perfection, starring Allison Williams (Get Out) and Logan Browning (Dear White People) in the lead roles explores an underrated horror sub-genre which is disturbing and scary at the same time and serves as an intriguing 90-minute watch. This movie is an impressive thriller which is able to successfully blend in a captivating storyline with some nerve-racking horror elements which enhanced the film’s style and character to the fullest extent. A rare Netflix Original which is compelling enough to get through. – Surya Komal

10. The Host (2006)

Director – Bong Joon-ho
Cast – Song Kang-Ho, Bae Doona

Preview Only: Bong Joon-ho’s 2006 monster-horror film, The Host is about an unidentified monster, which appears from the Han River in Seoul, kills hundreds, and also carries off Hyun-seo. When her family learns that she is being held captive, they resolve to save her. One of the Best Horror Movies on Netflix India.

9. Apostle

Director – Gareth Evans
Cast – Dan Stevens, Lucy Boynton

A period horror film, Apostle (2018), a Netflix film, revolves around Thomas Richardson, a former missionary set on rescuing his sister who has been kidnapped and held ransom by a religious cult. Following the concept of tense and creepy atmospheric films like The Invitation and The Innocents, Apostle, is an intense yet steady descent into terror and has a ruthless storyline and has a masterful way of narrating its story.

It is very transparent and wants you to understand that there is something around the corner that will scream at you in time to come. There is mastery in its execution, but the extremities of the content, as well as the jerkiness in the tone, might be off-putting to some. – Siddharthen

8. Bodies Bodies Bodies

Director – Halina Reijn
Cast – Rachel Sennott, Amandla Stenberg

In Bodies Bodies Bodies, Pete Davidson finally shines in a role worth watching. The movie starts a bit slow but keeps your attention throughout. It expertly captures modern teen conversations, thanks to sharp writing. Alice steals the show with her humor and charisma. The unexpected twist at the end adds a brilliant satirical touch, making this a must-see, even if it lacks scares. – Zoha Junaid

7. Scream (2022)

Director – Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett
Cast – Jenna Ortega, Neve Campbell

Preview Only: Twenty-five years after a streak of brutal murders shocked the quiet town of Woodsboro, Calif., a new killer dons the Ghostface mask and begins targeting a group of teenagers to resurrect secrets from the town’s deadly past.

6. Cam

Director – Daniel Goldhaber
Cast – Madeline Brewer, Patch Darragh

Best Horror Movies on Netflix India: A psychological horror-thriller centered on the premise of digital identity and its vulnerability, Cam stars Madeline Brewer as an online sex performer who is dead-set on climbing the ranks on the host website. Her efforts soon turn into a nightmarish reality, as one day she finds that her account has been hacked and is now live-streaming her erotic acts, without her own cognizance.

It is a great meditation on technology and its ills and the dignity of work; even in a dehumanizing industry as that of online sex-workers. It depicts how greatly our online personas vary from our real self, the consequences of asking for attention and the terrifying notion of losing one’s identity, especially online. – Kaushal Munshi

5. Hostel (2005)

Director – Eli Roth
Cast – Jay Hernandez, Derek Richardson

Preview Only: Eli Roth’s Hostel, over the years garnered quite a decent fan following and the story explores three friends travelling across Europe as they meet a man who convinces them to visit a hostel. When they reach the hostel, they encounter terrifying situations.

4. Get Out

Director – Jordan Peele
Cast – Daniel Kaluuya & Allison Williams

In Get Out, a seemingly innocent weekend visit to meet his girlfriend’s family turns into a nightmare for Chris Washington. This thought-provoking thriller, it delves into racial tensions in America. Daniel Kaluuya’s standout performance drives home the message, while the Armitage family’s eerie normalcy conceals dark secrets. The film’s meticulously crafted script offers nuanced social commentary, with Lil Rel Howery providing perfect comic relief. Get Out masterfully blends horror, race relations, and suburban paranoia into a compelling cinematic experience. One of the Best Horror Movies on Netflix India. – Zoha Junaid

3. The Ritual

Director – David Bruckner
Cast – Various

The Ritual follows the perilous hike of four middle-aged men to the King’s Trail in Northern Sweden. After paying respects to their recently deceased friend, the lads take a different route on their way back into a dense forest where eerie things start to appear.

When it comes to the technical aspects, this movie was breathtaking. The grand extravagant panorama of Northern Sweden was captured masterfully and was an absolute treat to the eye. The sound design, sound mixing, and the ominous background score complimented the camera work as the film felt like an experience which should not be missed. Overall, The Ritual is one of the Best Horror Movies on Netflix India, watch it on a big screen with the volume rocked up to the maximum. – Surya Komal

2. Gerald’s Game

Director – Mike Flanagan
Cast – Carla Gugino & Bruce Greenwood

The narrative involves a middle-aged couple striving to keep their marriage together as they take a weekend off to spend quality time together at their deserted vacation home. Involving only three or four characters at best and encompassed within a limited setting, the tightly written script by Jeff Howard and Mike Flanagan is the film’s strong suit here.

The dialogue between the characters, the emotional connotations, the self-discovery aspects develop an interesting character study of Jessie, played by Carla Gugino, who does an impeccable job showcasing the pain, anguish and adversity that her character had to go through while remaining handcuffed to the bedpost. Overall, this film is a riveting thriller carried by some splendid performances, writing, and a top-notch direction. – Surya Komal

1. 1922

Director – Zak Hilditch
Cast – Thomas Jane & Molly Parker

Based on another novella of the same name by Stephen King. 1922 is a character study of Wilfred James (played by Thomas Jane), a typical corn-field farmer who prides himself by saying that “A man’s pride was a man’s land.” Soon after few altercations with his wife, Wilfred convinces his son, Henry, to accompany him in murdering his mother as the film moves along with few nightmarish consequences.

Extending the point I made before, this movie is a character study and enhances the concepts of Karma, foolishness, intolerance and guiltiness masterfully. The three or four characters in the film were all written and utilized appropriately by director Zak Hilditch, primarily, the lead character of Wilfred, who undergoes massive trauma and regrets almost everything happened in the year 1922 in his otherwise happy family life.

Overall, 1922 is a horrific psychological drama filled in with profound meanings of different aspects about life. One of the Best Horror Movies on Netflix India and a top priority if you’re a movie fan. – Surya Komal
