Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Dog (2022) – Movie Reviews

Texas Chainsaw Massacre is directed David Blue Garcia, written by Chris Thomas Devlin, staring Sarah Yarkin as Melody, Elsie Fisher as Lila, Jacob Latimore as Dante, Mark Burnham as Leatherface, Moe Dunford as Richter, Olwen Fouéré as Sally Hardesty, and Nell Hudson as Ruth. After 50 years Leatherface has returned to Texas to terrorize a group of young friends who have disturbed his peace.

Ugh, I really don’t want to run through everything that sucks about this movie. Mostly it comes down to them not understanding the original movie. I love Texas Chainsaw Massacre because of the pure terror it instils in me, and a lot of that comes from the original budget but it haunted me. This is just too stylized. I’ll say there was at least a ton of gore but everything else was pathetic.

The writing is god awful, “Lets put the victim of a school shooting through more trauma!” The direction is non-existent. Some ones dead? Nope not quite! Over and over and over again. I don’t see what anyone would get out of this. Maybe some people would like to watch a bunch of gen z/millennials mowed down? At least they made it 80 minutes. I want to clarify this is not on Elsie Fisher! All in all, Texas Chainsaw Massacre has gore and nothing else to offer.

Dog (2022) is co-directed and written by Reid Carolin, co-directed and starring Channing Tatum as Briggs. Former Army Ranger Briggs is tasked with taking Lulu (a former Army Ranger Belgian Malinois) from base to the funeral of Lulu’s former handler. Eh! I think the standout here is Channing Tatum. It’s been a while since I’ve seen him in anything and he did a good job on screen, and behind the camera I think this was probably a good learning moment for him. It will be interesting to see what his next turn behind the camera would bring.

Reid Carolin also had their directorial debut I think the two did a fine job, but I have to wonder how much was Tatum and Carolin and how much was Lulu’s trainer. The movie itself, not a huge fan. Briggs deals with brain damage from his time in Afghanistan and they touch upon all the heinous things the military did and how it messes soldiers up, but I don’t think it goes anywhere.

If you love dogs, veterans, and road trips this is a decent movie for you. All in all, Dog (2022) is a mostly charming opposites to friends road trip movie.
