Severance S1 Review: A Work of Art and A Masterpiece!

Severance, a sci-fi psychological thriller, is an Apple TV+ Original created by Dan Erickson, and is directed by renowned actor Ben Stiller and Aoife McArdle. The show stars Adam Scott in the primary role with Zach Cherry, Britt Lower, Tramell Tillman, Jen Tullock, Dichen Lachman, John Turturro, Christopher Walken, and Patricia Arquette as the supporting cast.

The story of Severance begins with Mark Scout, an employee of Lumon Industries, leads a team of severed employees whose memories of their work life and outside life are severed. It means they have no memory of who they are outside of work, when they are at their job and vice versa. Eventually, Mark and his team begin a mission to learn the truth behind their jobs.

I finished Severance a few weeks back, and I am finally getting a chance to review it. This show was simply excellent, and it may be the best Apple TV+ Original. It is fascinating, provocative and is unforgivably entertaining as it is thought-provoking. Written and directed excellently and with such care and diligence. Every episode’s script is strong, and every frame is perfect. The storytelling is brilliant, original and the big team of writers led by Dan Erickson out do themselves and so do the directors. Ben Stiller, in particular is splendid at his directing job.

As far as the look of this show, it looks crisp and very pleasing to the eye. Severance has great cinematography thanks to cinematographers Jessica Lee Gagné and Matt Mitchell. Another aspect that I’d like to give props to is the music. The original score by Theodore Shapiro is groundbreaking and created a score that we will not soon forget.

Now onto the performances, the whole cast does a fantastic job, from Britt Lower, Zach Cherry to Christopher Walken and John Turturo. The standout performances though, for me, were that of Adam Scott, who is stellar. Patricia Arquette and Tramell Tillman are both astonishing in their roles. They are creepy, invasive and play their roles perfectly, along with Adam Scott. I loved all the performances, so it’s hard to pick a definitive favorite.

To sum up, Severance S1 on Apple TV+ provides us excellent and thought-provoking storytelling, ingenious direction, and cinematography. I totally recommend you to give this show a chance. It’s not for everyone, but it is magnificent in every way. It’s objectively a work of art and a masterpiece. I am going to give Severance my highest grade, A+.
