Pearl and The Woman King – Movie Reviews
Pearl is a 2022 slasher film, a prequel to X (2022), and serves as an origin story for the villain. It is directed and co-written by Ti West and stars Mia Goth, who reprises her role as the title character with David Corenswest, Emma Jenkins-Purro, and Tandi Wright in supporting roles.’

So, first off, based on the way that everyone talks about Pearl (2022), I feel like I should be in love with it, but I’m just not. That is not to say it’s bad, it’s not. It’s very good, and I recommend everyone to go watch it, I just can’t connect with it. The standout performer is, without a doubt, Mia Goth. The 29-year-old delivers a phenomenal performance that is wildly haunting, and I cannot wait to watch her after the X trilogy with MaXXXine, the third film in the franchise now in production.
The story isn’t wholly original, but it has the takes that make the movie its own. The kills fit the story and serve a purpose. All in all, Pearl is a strong horror movie. Just one that didn’t click with me.
‘Pearl (2022)’ Rating – 3.5/5
The Woman King, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (known for The Old Guard), is based on Agojie, an all-female warrior unit which protected the West African kingdom of Dahomey during the 17th to 19th centuries. The film stars Viola Davis in the lead role, with Thuso Mbedu, Lashana Lynch, Sheila Atim, and John Boyega, in supporting roles.
So, I was impressed with The Woman King and thought it’s a really good historical epic. It has everything you want from a movie set in the 1820s, a compelling narrative, good characters to root for, excellent fight scenes, and fantastic acting from the two main leads. If you just watched this and did not care about anything else, you’d get great enjoyment from it.

However, I am a history nerd and can’t let the inaccuracies go by. I’d encourage everyone to look into why the noble message the movie presents at the end about Dahomey isn’t entirely accurate. But, aside from that this movie alone is worth watching for what could be the birth of an amazing young actress in Thuso Mbedu. All in all, The Woman King, while not historically accurate, is damn entertaining.
‘The Woman King’ Rating – 4/5
