Elite Season 4 Review: Tired Teen Drama!

So Netflix’s hit Spanish teen drama Elite Season 4 promised lots of drama. They opted to switch out some less popular characters with characters who are just as unpopular. This season Nadia (played by Nina El Hammani) and Carla (played by Ester Exposito) are notably missing and their absence is felt. We do get to see some scenes of Nadia though, however briefly. Joining us were new characters like Mencia the rebel, her troublemaking brother Patrick and her overachieving spoiled sister Ari. Then there’s Phillipe.

I feel like Patrick is more or less them playing the same story with Ander (played by the very talented Aron Piper) and Omar. Redundant but I guess they had to throw a wedge in there somehow (as with all the other couples) so viewers don’t get bored. I just don’t think these cheap, outlandish plotlines are the way to do it.

The only characters I really like are Samuel, Guzman and Reba. And while Ari (who says she doesnt drink but seems to be turning into quite the alcoholic) was entertaining at least, the others are pretty much filler.

I really didn’t like how they dashed away the “couples” they worked so hard to establish for no other reason than flimsy entertainment. But they’re teenagers so I guess I can’t say it’s that surprising. I’ve just always felt like playing mix and match with a bunch of characters for “drama” is lazy writing though.

At least the soundtrack was really good. The costumes are of course ever flashy but it’s just so unrealistic to me that they get away with dressing like that at a prep school. It’s little things like that that makes these kinds of shows seem really out of touch with this era. Like this is what we wanted in 2010 not in 2021.

In fact if somebody asked me to sum up Elite Season 4 for them I’d say it’s 13 Reasons Why meets Spanish Gossip Girl. There’s nothing really unique to judge it on. Just a train of continuously tired teen drama tropes and romantic romps.

I was expecting the downturn of this show since last season honestly. If they do get another season, it’ll be their last. Judging by the fact that fifth seasons are extremely rare for Netflix shows since 2018, I wouldn’t bet on it. Watch ‘Elite Season 4’ on Netflix here.
