Bhoot Police Review: Could’ve Been a Lot Better!

Like some industry veterans have said before, ‘Horror-Comedy is a risky genre to execute.’ Three years ago, Stree, a blockbuster hit, opened the invisible door for this genre, even to the family audience who were never interested to watch horror movies as a group. However, Bhoot Police on Disney+ Hotstar did not do the genre any favors.

Soon after Stree, producers, with the intent to score another blockbuster, made similar movies with depleted quality, entertainment, and more. More recently, Roohi starring Janhvi Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao, ended up as a disappointment as people understood the specialty of Stree. Back to the current film, Bhoot Police, it is a decent entertainer and manages to hold the audience and their interest in this knavish ride.

Bhoot Police is about two brothers and ghost hunters who are assigned a project in a remote village where once their father freed people from the ferocious ghost called ‘Kichkandi.’ On a personal note, I liked these names that bonafide the values of horror material. Kichkandi, Vibhooti, Chiraunji and Ulatt Baba, it all sounds funny.

Though, these characters possess a few loopholes while looking at the sensible side of things. The female characters in Bhoot Police were a disappointment. Yami Gautam and Jacqueline Fernandez’s roles failed to find that rhythm and became predictable very soon.

Performance-wise, there is nothing much for the actors to offer when it comes to the narrative. Arjun Kapoor as Honest Tantrik may look better sometimes, but the rest of the time, he is strictly average alongside his counterpart, Saif Ali Khan, who is funny occasionally. Yami Gautam still finds it tough to fit in, and Jacqueline Fernandez is substandard to watch in every single frame.

The supporting cast is okay but could have been better. The jokes, on the other hand, were decent and inspired by Twitter and political memes. The screenplay, written by a group of four, is not bland, notably, when there’s isn’t much in the script to interest you.

Pavan Kriplani, unlike his previous impressive horror venture, Phobia, did not manage to crack the ideal formula for a horror-comedy. However, on a positive note, he did not make any horrible mistakes. Overall, Bhoot Police on Disney+ Hotstar could’ve been a lot better if the writers hadn’t delved more into the outdated theories and storytelling tropes. It is strictly a one-time watch.
