Honorable Mentions: Oh! Baby, Majili
5. Evaru

Director – Venkat Ramji
Starring – Adivi Sesh and Regina Cassandra
Streaming Platform – Amazon Prime

Loosely adapted from the 2016 Spanish film The Invisible Guest, Evaru is yet another suspense-thriller from Adivi Sesh similar to his 2016 film, Kshanam. Contrary to the original version, Venkat Ramji does a good job in mixing up things as he took the basic elements from the source material and made the narrative his own. Commendable performances from Regina and Sesh complement the complex narrative and the film will keep you guessing and entertained for the most part. However, if you even watched it’s Hindi version, Badla starring Taapsee Pannu and Amitabh Bachchan you might find this film predictable, but, it’s still worth giving it a shot.

4. Mallesham

Director – Raj R
Starring – Priyadarshi
Streaming Platform – Netflix

[This excerpt comes from Surya’s ‘Mallesham’ Review]

Mallesham starring Priyadarshi in the titular character showcases the zealous, stubborn and inspiring journey of Chintakindi Mallesham, the inventor of ‘Asu (Weaving) Machine’ and the prestigious Padma Shri award recipient. Although Mallesham could’ve been trimmed more compactly in the cutting room floor, director, Raj R succeeds in telling an inspirational story of a passionate individual who achieved his goal against all the odds. Priyadarshi’s stellar performance combined with some raw and down-to-earth storytelling aspects makes this a biopic a must-watch.

3. Brochevarevaru Ra

Director – Vivek Athreya
Starring – Sree Vishnu, Nivetha Thomas
Streaming Platform – Amazon Prime

Best Tollywood Movies of 2019: Vivek Athreya’s Brochevarevaru Ra is the perfect example of what Tollywood has been missing over the past few years. A black comedy starring Sree Vishnu and Nivetha Thomas in the lead roles, the film’s plot cruises through its runtime when a series of things lead to dreadful consequences in a fast-paced no-nonsense laugh riot. Athreya’s ability to tell an unorthodox story in the most entertaining and comedic way possible has to be appreciated along with the terrific performances from the entire cast and Vivek Sagar’s magnificent music composition. Brochevarevaru Ra further proves the point that the era of commercial movies is long gone and good experimental movies are here to stay.

2. Jersey

Director – Gowtam Tinnanuri
Starring – Nani and Shraddha Srinath
Streaming Platform – ZEE5

[This excerpt comes from Surya’s ‘Jersey’ Review]

Jersey starring Nani and Shraddha Srinath in the lead roles explores the story of a passionate cricketer, who is in his mid-30s coming back from retirement to fulfil his dream. Gowtam Tinnanuri, the man behind one of the most underrated gems of 2017, Malli Raava, serves as the director with Anirudh Ravichander as the music director and Sanu Varghese as the cinematographer for the film.

Jersey tells an incredible story of the finest, well-written and magnificently narrated character accompanied with an inspiring message that ‘It’s Never Too Late To Dream.’ This is definitely one of the best movies of the year and will remain close to my heart moving forward. Furthermore, this movie also proves that the Telugu Film Industry is moving in a positive direction where random comedic scenes and incompatible romantic songs are not required for a film to succeed. Kudos to Gowtam Tinnanuri for embracing the change!

1. Agent Sai Srinivasa Athreya

Director – Swaroop RSJ
Starring – Naveen Polishetty and Shruti Sharma
Streaming Platform – Amazon Prime

[This excerpt comes from Surya’s ‘Agent SSA’ Review]

Best Tollywood Movies of 2019: ‘Thriller’ is just another incognizant genre in the Telugu Film Industry as we, the audience, are accustomed to standard commercial films which blend in a multitude of formulaic aspects like music, humor, action and drama. But, in the recent past, the audience steadily started to embrace the unparalleled artistry of unorthodox movies when studios started putting out movies like Goodachari, Kshanam, 118 Movie and Shamantakamani which opened the door and gave the storytellers the much-needed confidence that they wished for.

Agent Sai Srinivasa Athreya falls under that same category of new and unorthodox movies which stars a fairly new cast, directed by a debutant filmmaker and produced by a movie studio which has only one (remarkable) film under its name.

Agent Sai Srinivasa Athreya excels with its compelling narration, delightful comedic scenes and had a significant social message to share. A thoroughly fresh and a gripping tale which moves rapidly and entertains the viewer at the same time without questioning their intelligence. Kudos the entire cast and crew for making an attempt and bringing something fresh and completely different to the table.
