7. Darbar

Director – A. R. Murugadoss
Starring – Rajnikanth & Nayanthara
Streaming Platform – Prime Video

[This excerpt comes from our ‘Darbar’ Review]

Written and directed by A. R. Murugadoss, Darbar is the first big Pan-Indian release of 2020 and stars Superstar Rajnikanth in the lead role, with Nayanthara, Yogi Babu, Sunil Shetty, and Nivetha Thomas filling in as the supporting cast. The basic premise of Darbar explores Aadhithya Arunachalam’s (Rajni) life as a cop as he takes on a case that involves drugs and women trafficking in a 150-minute action thriller.

Although A. R. Murugadoss tried his best to give an entertainer with a perfect mix of action, comedy, sentiment, and love, the familiarity of the plot plays the spoilsport. However, the Rajni factor works tremendously in the film as he carries the entire film and helps you forget the underwhelming plot. Darbar delivers to its core audience and settles itself as a commercial entertainer. Watch ‘Darbar’ on Amazon Prime here.

6. Psycho

Director – Mysskin
Starring – Udayanidhi Stalin, Aditi Rao Hydari
Streaming Platform – Netflix

[This excerpt comes from Sidd’s ‘Psycho’ Review]

The lack of empathy is what sets a psychopath apart from a regular human being. In that same way, a normal person’s inner journey is developed through reacting to the changing developments that take place in our lives. However, a person suffering from psychopathy could never, as they demonstrate a lack of emotional processing and response deficiencies. Mysskin’s Psycho (2020) is an interesting response to this theory above.

5. Vaanam Kottattum

Director – Dhana Sekaran
Starring – Vikram Prabhu, Aishwarya Rajesh
Streaming Platform – Prime Video

[This excerpt comes from Sidd’s ‘Vaanam Kottattum’ Review]

When you have a simple, archetypal plot to work with for a film, how do you make it better? Dhana Sekaran’s Vaanam Kottattum (2020) is a guideline on how to elevate an age-old script. The film revolves around a family of four. A father serving time for a crime he committed, a mother who takes over the duties of a breadwinner in his absence and their two children.

Vaanam Kottattum showcases the struggles of a family as they overcome their personal trials and tribulations individually and together as a unit. It’s either a hit or a miss for the audience and that depends on whether the individual has the patience to sit through a slow linear narration that may not have high moments to offer but has its heart in the right place.

4. Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithaal

Director – Desingh Periyasamy
Starring – Dulquer Salmaan, Ritu Varma
Streaming Platform – Netflix

Next on the list of the Best Tamil Movies of 2020 – Kannum Kannum Kollaiadithal is Mollywood’s heartthrob Dulquer Salmaan’s 25th film as an actor. KKK stars Ritu Varma, Rakshan, and Niranjani in pivotal roles with the ace director Gautham Vasudev Menon in a crucial role. This film is an interesting romantic-thriller with enjoyable twists and turns to make it a decent watch. Barring few logics, I enjoyed the film thoroughly, and I’m especially overwhelmed with Gautham Vasudev Menon’s dashing screen presence.

3. Ponmagal Vandhal

Director – J. J. Fredrick
Starring – Jyothika, R. Parthiban
Streaming Platform – Prime Video

[This excerpt comes from Nirmal’s ‘Ponmagal Vandhal’ Review]

Best Tamil Movies of 2020: Debutant director J. J. Fredrick’s Ponmagal Vandhal, starring Jyothika in the lead role, has an ensemble list of supporting casts from veteran actors like K. Bhagyaraj, R. Parthiban, Thiagarajan, to Pratap Pothen, and Pandiarajan. It is an emotionally overwhelming drama as J. J. Fredrick’s writing, and the visuals will leave a perennial impact on all of us.

Showcasing child sexual abuse as the central premise, the movie is constructed on the strength of the emotional values it carries powerfully demonstrated through Jyothika’s astounding performance. It might seem to have less convincing courtroom scenes, but everything else rounded up beautifully in the climax.

2. Oh My Kadavule

Director – Ashwath Marimuthu
Starring – Ashok Selvan, Ritika Singh
Streaming Platform – Prime Video

Starring Ashok Selvan, Ritika Singh and Vani Bhojan, Oh My Kadavule revolves around two childhood friends who decide to get married and how they cope up with their friendship and relationships. This is by far one of the best feel-good movies in recent times. Debutant Ashwanth Marimuthu has crafted this film with an ample amount of love, friendship, emotions, and comedy, making it a beautiful watch and #1 on the list of the Best Tamil Movies of 2020.

1. Soorarai Pottru

Director – Sudha Kongara
Starring – Suriya & Aparna Balamurali
Streaming Platform – Prime Video

[This excerpt comes from Nirmal’s ‘Soorarai Pottru’ Review]

Starring Suriya in the lead, Soorarai Pottru, directed by Sudha Kongra, is inspired by the life of G. R. Gopinath, a retired captain of the Indian Air Force and founder of Air Deccan. Backed up by a high-quality technical team, commendable performances, and to the point writing, Sudha Kongra delivers the film of the year and an outstanding movie in Suriya’s career. One of the Best Tamil Movies of 2020.
