6. Petta
Starring – Rajnikanth
Director – Karthik Subbaraj
Streaming Platform – Netflix
[This excerpt comes from Sidd’s ‘Petta’ Review]
When director Karthik Subbaraj promised that Petta (2019) would be a tribute to Superstar Rajinikanth, he delivered as promised. The film is basically a modern re-imagination of Baasha and as the audience, you pretty much know the course of where the film is headed. However, the director has placed certain clever plot twists that keeps you from guessing how it ends.
The director constantly reminds you that Petta is a throwback film by subtly throwing in certain “feelers.†The film consistently has old Tamil film songs littered throughout the movie and the side characters and their names are a throwback to Baasha, which I found smart. There were some impressive Gun-Kata action sequences towards the climax of the film which is a breakaway from the usual Tamil cinema hero fights.
5. Comali
Starring – Jayam Ravi, Kajal Aggarwal
Director – Pradeep Ranganathan
Streaming Platform – Hotstar
[This excerpt comes from Nirmal’s ‘Comali’ Review]
Best Kollywood Movies of 2019: Any millennial would still stay that 90’s was unarguably the best decade to grow up. The only generation of people who had real fun in the outside world before digitalization took over and made everyone confined to their smart phones. The memories of the childhood spent playing in the streets, listening to songs in cassette tape, enjoying Sachin’s straight drive are still fresh.Â
Comali is about Ravi (played by ‘Jeyam’ Ravi), who falls into Coma due to an accident while proposing his classmate and regains his consciousness 16 years later in 2016. It is probably the only film, which I can whole-heartedly call as an entertainer. Watch it for its nostalgic scenes, fine comedy and a solid two and half hour entertainment. Watch ‘Comali’ on Hotstar here.
4. Pernabu
Director – Ram
Cast – Mammootty, Anjali Ameer
Streaming Platform – Amazon Prime
[This movie is also featured in our ‘Best Indian Movies on Amazon Prime’ article]
Premiered at the International Film Festival Rotterdam on 27 January 2018, Peranbu again stars Mammootty in the lead role and opened to the general audience February 1, 2019, to positive reviews all across the board with many praising the film’s social message, performances, cinematography and the background score. Thoughtful, alluring and benevolent, Peranbu is revered as one of the Best Kollywood Movies of 2019. – Surya Komal
3. Super Deluxe
Starring – Vijay Sethupathi, Samantha
Director – Thiagarajan Kumararaja
Streaming Platform – Netflix
[This excerpt comes from Sidd’s ‘Super Deluxe’ Review]
Long has it been since I last felt like a helpless fly, stuck dead center in the webs of a spider, but Super Deluxe (2019) succeeds in sticking the audience into the spiral of its folds. A film, perhaps constructed to voice out the director’s thoughts on life and the themes that surround it, delivers intriguing multiple interrelated storylines with dark humor and philosophy.

At three hours of runtime, Super Deluxe can test your patience at times. It will get draggy and the film moves at a snail’s pace. Yet, every scene and dialogue have a purpose to the story and it will eventually tie up in the end. The film isn’t the neatest and the ending to the film might seem abrupt with some of the storyline feeling rushed at the end. However, if you’re willing to observe and reflect on the multitude of philosophies affixing the movie, you might be in for a hell of a ride.
2. Kaithi
Starring – Karthi, Narain
Director – Lokesh Kanagaraj
Streaming Platform – Hotstar
[This excerpt comes from Nirmal’s ‘Kaithi’ Review]
Director Lokesh Kanagaraj, who previously directed only one movie, has proven his worth and displays what he is capable of with Kaithi. Never have I ever seen a movie executed with sheer brilliance, captivating the audience with his screenplay and made sure he provides wholesome entertainment. Kaithi has Karthi as the main lead, Narain, Dheena, and several other supporting casts. Interestingly, the film does not have any female lead as the story doesn’t demand one and Kanagaraj opted to not add one forcefully.

Kaithi has everything you would expect from an action-thriller. Minimal dialogues, focusing more on the screenplay, scenes which give you an adrenaline rush, intense background score, nerve-racking action sequences, and a mixture of sentiment and mellow comedy, this movie had it all. I was personally, engrossed with the movie and its scenes that I couldn’t look for a negative to nitpick. I was satisfied after so long that I had the contempt of watching a worthy thriller and I was entertained too. Kaithi is a definite watch and undoubtedly one of the Best Kollywood Movies of 2019.
1. Asuran
Director – Vetri Maraan
Starring – Dhanush & Manju Warrier
Streaming Platform – Amazon Prime
[This movie is also featured in our ‘Best Indian Movies on Amazon Prime’ article]
Asuran can be pretty much summed up as ‘the rise of the oppressed’. The story basically deals with Sivasami a lower caste farmer tolerating all the oppression and abuses put forward by the upper caste only to avenge them later when the oppression goes beyond threshold limits. The screenplay and direction is too engaging and racy in the first half but drags up in the second half when Sivasami narrates his flashback. Following the list of progressive directors like Pa Ranjith and Mari Selvaraj, Vetri Maaran had done justice in portraying the dark and brutal realities of our society which many people still fail to acknowledge.
From the dialogues “Pulla usuru ponadhuku apram.. Maanatha mattum vechitu enna di panradhu†and “Padippa mattum namba kitta irundhu eduthukave mudiyadhu Chidambaram†it is very much evident what Vetri Maaran tries to convey. Dhanush’s acting skills simply can’t be put in words. He lived as Sivasami throughout the movie. To conclude, Asuran, a tale on the lives of oppressed presented in a commercial plate. Totally deserves the top spot in the Best Kollywood Movies of 2019 list. – Bharath Chandrashekhar
