8. Ad Astra
Starring – Brad Pitt
Director – James Gray
James Gray’s sci-fi drama – Ad Astra explores the complex relationship between the father and son duo with space exploration as the backdrop of the entire film. Similar to Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi epic – Interstellar, Ad Astra also invests a considerable amount of its runtime to elaborate the lead characters and showcase the emotional attachment between them which, in turn, highlights the ongoing narrative.
However, when it comes to sci-fi components of things, the stellar cinematography by the ultra-talented – Hoyte van Hoytema exhibits some breathtaking visuals that we’ve never seen before. The background score by Max Richter also adds to the somber narrative when it’s required. Overall, Ad Astra is not an awe-inspiring film to watch on the big screen but also connects with the audience with splendid character building and decent storytelling elements. A must watch!
7. The Peanut Butter Falcon
Starring – Shia LaBeouf, Dakota Johnson
Director – Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz
The Peanut Butter Falcon tells a simple-yet-earnest story of two strangers, who accidentally meet at the crossroads of their lives and quickly become best friends in the most unforeseen circumstances. Directed by Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz, this 97-minute comedy-drama allows the emotional and comedic scenes to blossom on-screen with the plainest sailing vibe from the beginning till the end. The social themes of enjoying the little things in life and not getting overwhelmed with other concerning factors were explained remarkably in the movie. Accompanied by some magnificent performances by Shia LaBeouf, Dakota Johnson and Zack Gottsagen, The Peanut Butter Falcon is a kind of film that you will adore watching from start to finish.
6. John Wick 3
Starring – Keanu Reeves, Asia Kate Dillon
Director – Chad Stahelski
The third installment in the John Wick franchise pulls out all the stops to make itself an out-and-out action flick for the ages. Starring Keanu Reeves in the lead role, the storyline is not the main focus of the movie as it is just essentially ‘John Wick vs. The World of Mafia.’ However, the kick-ass action sequences will knock your socks off, and director Chad Stahelski doesn’t hold back on any of this stuff as it is a treat to watch an action film shot flawlessly inside and out. John Wick 3 might be the best film in the franchise, and similar to its lead star, Reeves, these movies keep getting better every single time in terms of quality, etc.
5. Booksmart
Starring – Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein
Director – Olivia Wilde
Booksmart is a one-of-a-kind coming-of-age drama that showcases love, friendship, and complicated sensitivities to the fullest. A 105-minute delightful entertainer that cruises through its runtime and makes you go through a range of emotions from laughter to sentiment. Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein give the performances of their lifetime and share great chemistry on-screen and carry the movie all the way through. Olivia Wilde, who made her directorial debut with the film did a fantastic job in keeping the movie simple, and at the same time, making it endearing that we will cherish forever. One of the most feel-good films of 2019.
4. Marriage Story
Starring – Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson
Director – Noah Baumbach
[This excerpt comes from Surya’s ‘Marriage Story’ Review]
Best Hollywood Movies of 2019: Marriage Story on Netflix starring Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson in the lead roles is a classic example of a well-put-together drama and further affirms the fact that you can create magic on-screen when you let the scenes play, and the characters speak. Noah Baumbach, who is well-known for directing critically-acclaimed films like Frances Ha and While We’re Young in recent years, hits it out-of-the-park with Marriage Story as it easily one of the Best Hollywood Movies of 2019.
One of the many things Marriage Story on Netflix succeeded in doing is making me believe that the drama is unraveling right in front of my eyes. The storyline, narration, execution, dialogue, and extraordinary performances from the cast make this a flawless film with very little to zero negative traits. A home run by Netflix, and also one of the best dramas I’ve seen in recent years that takes the subject and its characters seriously in every extent.
3. 1917
Starring – George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman
Director – Sam Mendes
[This excerpt comes Surya’s ‘1917’ Review]
Much like the 2014 Academy award winner – Birdman, Sam Mendes’ 2019 war film – 1917 follows the same format that makes the film look like one continuous take for the entire two-hour runtime. Set during Operation Alberich of World War I, the storyline of 1917 follows the travel of two young British Lance Corporals – Schofield and Blake (George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman) as they try to deliver direct orders from their General to Colonel Mackenzie to call off the attack on the Germans for considerable reasons.
1917 is a spectacle to behold, a titanic display of hard work and perfection, and is a must-watch movie on the big screen. Accompanying the phenomenal camera work, Mendes also managed to put forth the emotion and the mental struggle these soldiers go through for years in concise, well-expressed portions in a two-hour movie. From the extraordinary performances to everything technical—sound, visuals, etc. 1917 is a movie you cannot miss watching in theaters.
2. Ford v Ferrari
Starring – Christian Bale and Matt Damon
Director – James Mangold
James Mangold’s Ford v Ferrari follows the story of a team of American engineers led by Carroll Shelby and Ken Miles, who are appointed by Henry Ford II with the mission of building the Ford GT40. A new racing car, which at least on paper, has the ammo to defeat the multiple-time champion – Ferrari; at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans race in France.
With the right amount of runtime under 160 minutes, one of the many positives of Ford v Ferrari is that it keeps you engaged in the storyline from start to finish. The pacing of the movie was on-point, the diverse elements of laughter, emotion, and entertainment complement the narrative remarkably alongside the terrific performances by Bale and Damon. Similar to the 2013 film ‘Rush,’ Ford v Ferrari is an impressive, high-budget sports-drama that rejuvenates the fun of watching a movie on the big screen. One of the Best Hollywood Movies of 2019, do not miss it!
1. Joker
Starring – Joaquin Phoenix
Director – Todd Phillips
[This excerpt comes from Pallavi’s ‘Joker’ Review]
Best Hollywood Movies of 2019: Joker is set in the 80s in the fictional city of Gotham and tells the story of a psychologically unstable man by the name Arthur Fleck, just before his imminent descent into the persona of Joker – an unhinged psychotic criminal. First off, Joker isn’t an easy watch. However, it is refreshing that the movie has dared to step into a comic book universe to hold up a mirror to the society we engage every day. It takes a chance to examine the society’s role in creating criminals and is a must-watch, particularly for Joaquin Phoenix’s hypnotizing performance.
