Sunny Review: The Jayasurya Starrer is a One-Time Watch!

Ranjith Sankarâ€™s Sunny on Amazon Prime Video, a 2021 Malayalam film is a feel-good drama that portrays the struggles in the life of Sunny and how life changes around him. Produced by the lead-actor Jayasurya himself, co-actors like Innocent, Vijayaraghavan, Aju Varghese, and Shivada had the sound-space instead of the screen time.

The 93-minute crunch of Sunnyâ€™s life is a roller-coaster ride of fate and joy, that lets us immersed in different phases of existence. Sunny (Jayasurya) flies back to Kerala after the shattering moments in Dubai during the global pandemic, and the movie takes us through the quarantine period when he is locked inside his home amidst the mental pressures.

Doctor Eerali (Innocent) approaches at the right time, calming the anxiety Sunny. Through his exchanges with the Doctor, we take a look at the lead character’s life. Despite sharing a good relationship with Nimmi (Shivada), he makes decisions that destroys his life and passion for music. Will the quarantine pressure eat him up, or could he bounce back?

Written and directed by Ranjith Sankar, the plot dives slowly into a heart-soothing experience cruising through different emotions of anxiety, guilt, contempt, and joy. It took time for the story to advance, and the first half was quite dull.

Later, the film created a positive vibe, and the music by Sanker Sharma had an impact in setting things right in the second half. Within the limits of a confined space, cinematography by Madhu Neelakandan delivered a pleasing visual beauty that captured Bolgatty and Kochi backwaters.

A single-man show, for the most part, Jayasurya, who we last saw in the movie Vellam delivered a profound performance picturing the lousy and joyful phases of his character. Sritha Sivadas shared limited screentime, but the dubbing by Sruthi Ramachandran had much to do with the role of Aditi, who glued us to the conversations between her and Sunny.

With the verbal exchanges setting the tone of the film, Innocent was exemplary in rendering a positive environment. Overall, Sunny on Amazon Prime Video is a poignant story of highs and lows in the life one has to hang around. A good one-time watch!
