White With Fear Review: Fear, Race, and Political Control!

In White With Fear, Andrew Goldberg offers a hard-hitting analysis of how USA’s conservative political forces have strategically manipulated racial tensions for decades. Drawing a clear connection between Richard Nixon’s divisive rhetoric in the late 60s and the tactics used by the contemporary MAGA movement steered vehemently by Donald Trump, the film reveals the outrageous methods behind stoking fear to solidify political power and push a toxic, exclusionary agenda.

Starting with the Historical Context and Evolution of Racism in Politics. White With Fear meticulously traces the evolution of racial manipulation in American politics, beginning with Richard Nixon’s infamous 1968 campaign. His “Law and Order” rhetoric, aimed at Black communities, set the stage for future political strategies based on racial fear. Over time, this divisive narrative evolved, gaining momentum through successive administrations and ultimately culminating in the MAGA movement. The film highlights how these tactics have continued to evolve, remaining central to conservative political campaigns to this day.

Next, Fear as a Political Tool. Fear, particularly racial fear, has been a powerful tool in shaping political agendas throughout recent history. Nixon’s 1968 campaign masterfully used fear of Black people to stoke anxiety, portraying them as threats to societal order. This strategy only grew more refined over time. After 9/11, Muslims became the new target, with politicians leveraging anti-Islamic rhetoric to rally support. Similarly, during the COVID-19 pandemic, in the beginning of 2020, Asian communities faced vilification, as the virus was irresponsibly dubbed the “Chinese Virus” or the “Wuhan Virus.”

The Black Lives Matter movement also found itself under attack, as it was framed as an anarchic threat rather than a call for justice. Illegal immigrants, too painted as lawless invaders, further deepening societal divisions. In each case, fear became a tool to rally support for divisive causes, undermining unity.

Furthermore, The Role of Media and Influencers. Media figures and influencers like Steve Bannon, Sean Hannity, Donald Trump, and the majority of hosts on Fox News including the infamous Tucker Carlson have played a pivotal role in amplifying racial grievances to further their political goals. By consistently promoting narratives that exploit racial fear, they’ve been able to rally support for divisive causes, often blurring the line between fact and fiction. This strategic use of media has not only stoked societal divisions but also served to consolidate power within the hands of a few.

At the same time, other than the media and their fear-mongering tactics, late-stage capitalism has exacerbated economic inequality, with the wealthy elite leveraging racial fear to distract and divide the working class. By fueling resentment toward marginalized groups, those in power maintain control, keeping the masses focused on scapegoats rather than the root causes of their struggles.

In conclusion, White With Fear is an unflinching examination of how race, fear, and politics have been intricately linked over decades to maintain power. Goldberg’s film compellingly reveals how fear of the “other” has been weaponized to manipulate voters. It’s a stark reminder of how media, influential figures, and economic systems have worked in tandem to perpetuate divisions. As the film outlines, these tactics not only deepen societal fractures but also distract from the underlying issues of inequality, making it an essential watch for understanding the intersection of race, power, and politics today.
