What are the Odds? Review: An Odd Teen Drama!

What are the Odds? written and directed by Meghna Ramaswamy is a FilmCaravan Original acquired by Netflix, and the movie’s cast includes Yashaswini Dayama, Karanvir Malhotra in the lead roles with Abhay Deol (also Producer), Monica Dogra, Priyanka Bose, and Manu Rishi Chadda as the supporting cast.

The story of What are the Odds? is set in a fairy-tale Mumbai where talking goldfish and snow are a real thing. Broken up into four chapters, this 90-minute quirky drama, has an incredibly unique storyline. And it is about how two distinct teenagers embark on an unhinged adventure to do crazy stuff filled with friendship, zaniness, and music.

Although What are the Odds? was initially planned as a web series, but it later came together as a movie as this resulted in a little bit of a mix-up on the overall presentation of the product. However, Yashaswini Dayama and Karanvir Malhotra fit in their roles flawlessly, and their performances were on-point and satisfactory. Abhay Deol once again manages to win all our hearts with his casual body language and incredible acting skill alongside the remainder of the cast from Monica Dogra to Priyanka Bose.

Furthermore, the entire movie is filled with oddities that might leave you perplexed, therefore, the title – What are the Odds? matches the theme perfectly. The opening of the film has Abhay Deol narrating the basic plot and it helped me understand the movie better. Subsequently, during the entire first half, the movie felt a bit inconsistent because the characters were introduced one after another without any proper set-up between the scenes as the narration was uneven, and it lacked clarity. And due to these primary reasons, I was unable to connect to the narrative emotionally, regardless of a few engaging moments.

But, I must appreciate Meghna Ramaswamy for trying out a completely fresh concept, but, it could’ve been a bit more fine-tuned. Abhay Deol’s part in the story was the only time when I was curious to know more. The remainder of the film did not seem to attract me much as there were a ton of confusing scenes. The subplots could have been developed better which would have made the movie better. The background score and music by Sagar Desai are decent, soothing, and fun. It will surely leave your foot tapping. And the cinematography is crisp and neat which gives a good vibe.

Overall, What are the Odds? failed to leave an impact for the most part as there are a few moments that worked. However, do not get your hopes high, else you will be left disappointed. Watch ‘What are the Odds?’ on Netflix here.
