Wednesday S1 Review: Fun & Emotionally Compelling!

Ever since its conception in the 1960’s, The Addams Family has seen numerous interpretations to an array of results. The newest rendition is segmented to the story of Wednesday Addams, as she is transferred to a boarding school for mystical outcasts. It turns into a fun mystery series, but also boasts a lot of strong character driven subplots that supplement Wednesday’s own development. Created by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, this coming-of-age supernatural comedy horror is released on November 23, 2022 and opened to record viewerships.

The best attribute to Wednesday is the goth girl herself. Jenna Ortega reprises the role, and this is, without any reserve, the best interpretation of the character. Ortega commits a lot not only to blend into her character, but to also grant a growing sense of likeability. While the writing of Wednesday Addams is particularly strong, Ortega provides a great deal of support through her performance. The supporting cast does well too, but Jenna Ortega fiercely holds on to the spotlight (especially with that iconic dance sequence). I found that the incorporation of literal outcasts into the story helped flesh out Wednesday even further, while also granting those specific characters their own moments of interest.

Even with the attention prioritized on character building, the main plot remains interesting by utilizing a few clever twists. Not every twist is done well, with more predictable revelations becoming present overtime. However, the overall mystery remains interesting and captivating. A lot is done well with the production design and use of practical effects. The gothic architecture of Nevermore, the make-up work of certain mythical individuals, and the detailed craft of Thing are nothing short of impressive. There is plenty of well done shot composition at times, and the music from Danny Elfman is brilliant. The use of CGI was not so good, as the creatures brought to life digitally don’t blend well into the environment.

Tim Burton’s first season of Wednesday is so much fun as a fantasy/comedy/horror/mystery series. Jenna Ortega is perfect as the title character, and the attentiveness to elevating a cast of social rejects kept me emotionally compelled. Watch ‘Wednesday’ on Netflix here.
