1. Adipurush
After SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali, Prabhas has become the heart-throb of the nation as well as the first choice of filmmakers to play historical roles. The handsome hunk will be seen in Adipurush, a hugely mounted magnum opus, based on the Hindu epic Ramayana. Prabhas is essaying the role of Lord Rama while Saif Ali Khan has been roped in to play mighty Lankesh aka Raavana in the film.
Om Raut, who earlier helmed Ajay Devgn’s Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior, is going to direct Adipurush and it will be made on a colossal budget of over Rs 400 Cr. The project would start rolling in January and is slated to hit screens in August 2021. One of the most-awaited Upcoming Historical and Mythological Bollywood Movies.
2. Brahmastra
Hugely inspired by the spontaneous global success of Baahubali, Karan Johar announced Brahmastra (Trilogy) featuring Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Amitabh Bachchan, and Akkineni Nagarjuna in the lead roles, and it’s one of the costliest film ever made in Hindi cinema. Revolving around Indian mythology, Ranbir Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, and Akkineni Nagarjuna are reportedly playing the reincarnations of Lord Shiva, Brahma, and Vishnu respectively in this action-fantasy film.
Directed by Ayan Mukerji, the first part of Brahmastra is slated to arrive in 2021, and if well-executed, it has the potential to create history. Karan Johar and his team are going all out to make Brahmastra a visual spectacle that would explode on big screens.
3. Chanakya
Next on the list of the Upcoming Historical and Mythological Bollywood Movies, Ajay Devgn, who recently impressed one and all with his terrific performance as Subedar Tanhaji Malusare, is all set to play Chanakya, the master economist and a royal advisor of the first Mauryan emperor Chandragupta, in Neeraj Pandey’s next directorial. This historical-drama will be made in two-parts, and Ajay Devgn is going to shave his head off to portray this ancient character.
Just like Tanhaji, Chanakya will also be mounted on an opulent scale and it’s going to be the most expensive movie of Ajay Devgn’s career. The makers are currently engaged with heavy pre-production work, and it’s expected to start rolling from mid-2021.
4. Ram Setu
An adventure-drama featuring Akshay Kumar as an archeologist, Ram Setu is yet another Bollywood offering that walks through the chapters of our Indian history and mythology. Revolving around the majestic Ram Setu bridge linking India’s Rameshwaram to Sri Lanka’s Mannar Island built by Lord Rama, the shoot of this big-budget film would take place at Ayodhya, the birthplace of Rama.
One of the most awaited Upcoming Historical and Mythological Bollywood Movies, Ram Setu would start rolling from the mid-next year and it’s slated to hit screens by Diwali 2022. Abhishek Sharma of Parmanu: The Story of Pokharan fame is going to helm this project which would be co-produced by Akshay Kumar.
5. Prithviraj
Based on the life of great Hindu warrior king Prithviraj Chauhan, this period war-drama will unfold Samrat Prithviraj’s initial military attainments, love saga with princess Sanyukta and the battle with Mohammed Ghori of Afghanistan who led the Islamic conquest of Hindustan. Akshay Kumar will be seen portraying the legendary character of Prithviraj Chauhan while Manushi Chhillar and Sanjay Dutt are playing Sanyukta, the princess of Kannauj and Mohammed Ghori, the Afghanistan ruler respectively.
Bollywood’s ace production house Yash Raj Films is bankrolling this prestigious project under the direction of Dr Chandraprakash Dwivedi. The shoot of Prithviraj has resumed last month and the film is eyeing for a mid-2021 release. One of the anticipated Upcoming Historical and Mythological Bollywood Movies.
6. Ponniyin Selvan
A mega budget ambitious historical-drama being made in the direction of Mani Ratnam, Ponniyin Selvan will throw lights on the legendary Chola Dynasty. Apart from the plot and scale, it’s the humongous star cast that makes this biggie a much-anticipated venture across the entire nation. Ponniyin Selvan features ‘Chiyaan’ Vikram, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Trisha and Amitabh Bachchan in the crucial roles.
The production of Ponniyin Selvan kick-started in November last year and a major chunk of it’s shoot has been already wrapped up. It will be released in two-parts like Baahubali in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada languages.
7. Mahaveer Karna
Upcoming Historical and Mythological Bollywood Movies: Many filmmakers in the past have tried to make a live-action film on Hindu epic Mahabharata, but not even a single movie went on floors, maybe the sheer scale and grandeur of the story dissuaded them. To be honest, it’s not quite easy to cover the entire Mahabharata in a single film, and that’s the reason RS Vimal has opted to direct a film on Karna with ‘Chiyaan’ Vikram. The magnum opus, titled Mahaveer Karna, will narrate the story of Mahabharata from Karna’s point of view.
Before diving into the world of Ponniyin Selvan, Chiyaan Vikram had completed the shoot of Mahaveer Karna’s vital portions, and he will resume work on this epic war-drama once he is done with the Mani Ratnam directorial. Being mounted on gigantic canvas with around Rs 300 Cr budget, Mahaveer Karna will have a multilingual release in 2022. A small behind the scenes video of Chiyaan Vikram in the getup of Karna was unveiled on his birthday which took the expectations to a whole new level.
8. The Immortal Ashwatthama
After the blockbuster success of Uri: The Surgical Strike, the actor-director-producer trio Vicky Kaushal, Aditya Dhar, and Ronnie Screwvala have joined hands once again to make a film on Ashwatthama, an Immortal Warrior and Guru Dronacharya’s son in the epic Mahabharata, who fought for Kauravas against the Pandavas in the brutal war of Kurukshetra. Vicky Kaushal has already started learning horse-riding and sword-fighting to portray the character with ease, and he is going to put on some weight as well.
Sara Ali Khan has been roped in to play the female lead in this adventure war-drama film that will start rolling by October-2021. The mega-budget film will be shot over 80-90 days at multiple foreign locations including India.
9. Draupadi
Just like Chiyaan Vikram’s Mahaveer Karna and Vicky Kaushal’s The Immortal Ashwatthama, Deepika Padukone is also doing a film on Mahabharata’s another powerful character, Draupadi, the wife of Pandavas. The official announcement of this period epic-drama was made a few months back and currently, the film is in the pre-production stage which is taking more time than expected.
Going by the reports, the production of Draupadi is expected to begin in the second half of 2021 and the film is looking for an early-2023 release. An official announcement regarding the director and other cast is yet to be made. One of the most awaited Upcoming Historical and Mythological Bollywood Movies.
10. Ramayana
Just like Mahabharata, Ramayana is yet another Hindu epic for which the audience across the globe is eagerly looking forward to witnessing on big screens. Though Prabhas and Saif Ali Khan starrer Adipurush is an adaptation of the epic, a solo straight film on Ramayana is also being made under the direction of Nitesh Tiwari and Ravi Udyawar. Three prominent producers; Allu Arvind, Namit Malhotra, and Madhu Mantena have come on board to bankroll this prestigious project with a colossal budget of over Rs 500 Cr.
It’s going to be a three-part series that will be entirely shot in 3D. The official announcement of Ramayana was made last year, and the shooting is expected to kick-off in the second half of 2021. The makers are currently occupied with the heavy pre-production and haven’t begun the casting yet. We can expect some official announcement regarding the same very soon.
11. Suheldev
Another unsung hero of our glorious Indian history, Suheldev was a legendary warrior king who hailed from Shravasti of Uttar Pradesh. He had defeated Mahmud of Ghazni’s army in the Battle of Bahraich in 11th century AD and reconstructed the majestic Somnath Temple, which was earlier demolished by Ghazni. The triumph was so mammoth that no foreigner dared to look at India for the next 150 years.
Renowned author Amish Tripathi has recently launched a book on the fierce king, titled Suheldev: The King Who Saved India. The bestselling book will soon be converted into a motion picture and Amish himself is co-producing this magnum opus venture. However, the announcement of cast and crew is yet to be made by the makers, it’s believed that Ajay Devgn is going to portray King Suheldev on screen. Ad-filmmaker Senthil Kumar is going to make his mainstream directorial debut with this enormous project. One of the most awaited Upcoming Historical and Mythological Bollywood Movies.
12. Hiranyakashyap
After Rudhramadevi, Rana Daggubati and director Gunasekhar have joined hands again to make a spectacular film on Hiranyakashyap. The Virata Parvam actor will be playing the role of eponymous demon king Hiranyakashyap, who was executed by one of the tenth avatars of Vishnu – Narasimha. Rana’s father Suresh Babu has come on board to bankroll this mythical film that will be canned on a humongous scale with a staggering investment of around Rs 180 Cr.
Gunasekhar has already wrapped up the entire pre-production work of Hiranyakashyap, but the film would start rolling only by end-2021 since the actor-director duo is currently occupied with their ongoing assignments.
