5. Pathemari

Salim Ahamed’s Pathemari narrates the travails of a Gulf Malayali and their never-ending miseries. Mammootty portrays the character of Narayanan, who had the responsibilities of his family on his shoulders, who travels to Gulf in a Pathemaari (sloop) some decades back. Mammootty carries forward the story with elements of honesty and elegance, and it is pleasing to watch Mammooty’s performance.


4. Munnariyippu

Venu’s Munnariyippu is the story of ex-convict Raghavan who has been jailed for two homicides. Anjali (Aparna Gopinath), a freelance journalist is behind Raghavan to find the untold mysteries in his life, with the only motto of publishing a book. Raghavan is a character which is tougher to reach to the audience, and Mammootty had delivered a perfect blend of mystery and innocence to the character. The film is backed with a perfect script and Mammootty has done the best in expressing complex human emotions.

3. Unda

Director – Khalid Rahman

Khalid Rahman’s Unda is one of a kind, the best realistic police story that shows the true colors of policemen. Mammootty portrays the role of Sub-Inspector Mani, who leads a group of cops posted in Chattisgarh for election duty. Although they are posted in a dangerous Maoist affected area, the lack of workforce, ammunition and the survival make the rest of the story. It’s one of the well-written movies which is inspiring and entertaining, and Mammootty has nailed the character of a policeman in the most realistic manner.


2. Yatra

Director – Mahi V. Raghav

Mahi V Raghav’s Yatra recounts the real-life events of Late. Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy’s (former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh) celebrated a political campaign called the Padayatra (Journey by Foot). Mammootty portrays the lead role of YSR, and he has lived through the great moments. Cherished for its splendid narrative style, well-paced screenplay, tear-jerking scenes and likeable performances from the entire cast, especially Mammootty, Yatra is emotionally riveting and feels less like Indian propaganda compared to the recent campaign-driven films.

Ram’s Peranbu has showcased the stellar performance by Mammootty as Amudhavan, the father of a child who needs special attention. The film conveys the story of Paapa, a child with Cerebral palsy, her teenage struggles as she is walking into sexualities. The film showcases the unconditional love, which is out of the box concept. The film received positive reviews all across the board with many praising the film’s social message, performances, cinematography and the background score. Peranbu is the best Mammootty film of recent times, where he has delivered exceptional performance in picturing varied emotions on-screen.
