Titans Season 3 Review: Half Written & Unsatisfying!

I’ve been following Titans since it’s debut because I felt it had potential despite its shortcomings, mostly of a technical nature. The move to HBO for Season 3 ensured a bigger budget and better production value for viewers or so I thought… It seems that the show exchanged a smoother look for arguably worse writing.

Titans has always been most interesting when they leverage the emotions of the characters and their individual storylines. Season 3 represents the Titans finally becoming the superhero team they need to be and frankly, there’s no better initiation than Gotham city.

Dick (Brenton Thwaites) sees that it’s not so easy being Batman as he leads his band of Merrymen to their doom. It’s clear his team isn’t familiar with this city’s particular brand of crazy. Kori (Anna Diop) is probably my favourite, speaking of, what’s with Kory’s hair? You’re telling me you couldn’t find a better wig for a main character on an HBO production? That’s before you consider how important Starfire’s hair is to her character.

Not really sure how I feel about Jason, seems more like a scared kid than a terrifying villain. His storyline this season was poorly written and filled with holes. Tim Drake however, is a great addition to the cast. Vincent Kartheizer is a great actor but he was sorely underutilized in this production and I did not enjoy this rendition of Scarecrow.

Even though the show misses in the costume department, the soundtrack was unexpectedly delightful. There are a few inconsistencies this season ranging from minor to moderate. You probably won’t notice them though unless you’re paying close attention.

In the end I’m disappointed with how this season shaped up especially since the set up was quite solid. It seems like they tried to tackle too much and unfortunately, it comes off contrived, half written and unsatisfying with only a few redeeming episodes, those being 3, 9 and 11.

The good thing about the show though, is that it gives itself a lot of room to work with. I’m just afraid this may become too much to hang itself with later on. After this season I’d say it’s heading in that direction. Still I’ll give it one more season before I throw in the towel.
