Thor: Love and Thunder Review – Flawed Narration Spoils the Show!

Starring Chris Hemsworth, reprising his role as the God of Thunder, Thor Love and Thunder is the 29th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Directed by Taika Waititi, the film chronicles the life of the second strongest avenger after the events of Endgame and his search for a purpose of his life. The film also has Christian Bale, Natalie Portman, and Tessa Thompson in the supporting roles.

The storyline of Thor Love and Thunder begins with Gorr (Christian Bale), who was disheartened that his prayers went unanswered, leading to the death of his daughter, gets manipulated by Necrosword, which yields the power to kill Gods, and goes on a rampage killing all of them. When Thor realizes that New Asgard is his next target, he teams up with Valkyrie and Dr. Jane Foster to stop him, which forms the rest of the plot.

Right from the beginning of Thor Love and Thunder, Taika Waititi fails to establish a strong emotional connection, based on which Love and Thunder is built. There were several key moments in the film which were underused and felt flat. Also, the structure of the film is distorted. Starting as vlogging the life of Thor post Endgame, with the Guardians of the Galaxy, the movie quickly shifts its focus on Dr. Jane Foster and her medical troubles and gives cameos of Gorr and his hunting of Gods. Waititi fails to convincingly piece them together and does not use the opportunity to create a story worth telling.

With the advent of mini-series inside MCU, this film would have been better off told as a weekly episode, and people would have happily forgotten when Stranger Things streamed. Yet MCU’s struggle to have a decent standalone film for Thor continues with Love and Thunder. I was extremely disappointed when a performer like Christian Bale was not given a role worth remembering. Taika Waititi can be lauded for making the film as breezy as it gets, as it is carefree and emotionless for the most part.

The comical timings and the quirky dialogues are enjoyed at times, yet the larger picture is a train wreck with very little to enjoy. Overall, Thor Love and Thunder suffer from inconsistent writing, which certainly lacks some emotional depths. Taika Waititi plummets without penning a neat character arc for its central figures, and the screenwriting plays the spoilsport.
